* Bus service

There is an efficient network of bus routes within the city limits of Torrevieja. The cost of a journey is €1,50 and correct change is required

A useful app is available, on Apple and Android devices, which shows all the routes with maps, bus stops and times of next buses. Search in AppStore or Google Play for “Costa Azul” and download the app titled “Utilities”.

  • For city services select “Líneas Urbanas”.
  • For intercity services select “Líneas Interurbanas”.

* Torrevieja bus pass

If you are on the padrón in Torrevieja, you’re entitled to the Tarjeta Ciudadano (or Citizen Card).

It costs 7€ - for life - and gives you completely free city travel. (There are discounts advertised periodically on certain events.) The card needs to be renewed annually but there is no further charge.

* Initial application

**There is a sign stating you need a translator if you’re not a Spanish speaker but you can avoid this by preparing what you need to say beforehand using Google Translate. “Me gustaría la tarjeta ciudadano por favor” (I would like the citizens’ card please) is enough. **

You will need a padrón dated in last three months. It’s worth taking your passport and/or driving licence although you may not need ID

Visit the Transport office within the Mercado Central (La Plasa), Calle José Martínez Ruiz Azorín, s/n, 03181 Torrevieja, Alicante.

The official will give you the payment form and an appointment slip for the next day (cita previa).

Take the payment form to the bank round the corner (Caja Rural Central Oficina Principal,

Calle José Martínez Ruiz Azorí)

They only carry out this type of transaction first thing in the morning, so you may need to return the following day. When you arrive at the bank you must secure your place in the queue by entering the bank and going to the machine where you obtain your ticket. You may have to go back outside in order to socially distance until it’s your turn.

When you’ve paid the 7€ fee, the clerk will stamp the paper and return it to you.

Go back to the office in the market with your proof of payment and padrón. The transport official will take your photograph and produce your pass.

* Annual renewal

Every year you can pop back to the transport office and hand in your pass. The official will scan your card to renew it and it’s ready to use again.

That’s interesting. I’ve never had a translator with me. I just rehearse what I need to say before hand. There’s not much discussion needed. Has anyone else experienced this?

Hello

I agree Annie...I would say not always necessary, I have 2 new friends who moved here last year & with almost no spanish at all,   they have both aquired bus passes successfully.

Cheers Elinspain

I have amended the guide but you really only need to say “Me gustaría la tarjeta ciudadano” and he will know you want the citizens card. There’s no further conversation required. Good luck.
