Big subject!
First check what formats your TV can play. Our (several years old) Panasonic will only play a wierd format, but the satellite receiver box will play a wide range of formats, so I plug my memory stick and external hard drive into that.
If you want to pay for movies, then I think the place to start would be Amazon, but it's not something I do, and I don't know what formats they provide.
You can download most movies for free using torrents - just search for torrent and the name of the film you want. You need a torrent program on your computer - I prefer uTorrent. There are also lots of download sites, like bolt.cd, but the problem with these is that for a movie you have to do a lot of downloads.
I'm not interested in movies, but I am interested in music videos. For these I either use torrents, or I download YouTube videos, using a YouTube download site like https://www.onlinevideoconverter.com/video-converter, which lets you choose the format to download.
If I download a video in DVD format, I use the free program Handbrake to convert it to the format I want.
If I download a file in a format my satellite receiver won't play, I use Xilisoft to convert it to a format I can play.
Over the last few days, I've downloaded an Andre Rieu concert DVD, picked out the tracks I want, and converted them to a format I can play.
