1st year in Spain - long term car rental

We are currently trying to educate ourselves on what we need to know for retiring to Spain early next year. We note that you cannot buy a car until you have both registered as a resident plus have rented/owned a property for 1 year. On this basis can anyone offer me information on reputable and reasonably priced long term car hire companies in the surrounding area please? Or - would it make more sense to bring a car with us from the UK? (Although I’m guessing that them means we would then need to return it to the UK when ready to sell it on?).

Ray is correct in his reply and I would add that since originally buying our property as a holiday home I sold a RHD van here in Spain that I used to transport items from the U.K. and when making the permanent move sold a RHD car that was used to get our dog here. After that I bought a LHD car with no restrictions on how long I had been here, either as a Non-Resident or Resident, simply had to provide my NIE number and Passport.

Hi

I bought my car within two weeks of arriving in Spain, I only needed to show my NIE, passport and I think my pardon.

Even a Non Resident can buy a car . Just NIE needed and no Padron necessary as in theory Non Residents are not supposed to sign on the Padron.

Jan, I like that you say "in theory" as we had to prove we were on the Padron as part of our Residencia application, only in Spain, LOL.

Many thanks for your response. I am much happier knowing we can in fact buy ASAP. I did think it was a strange rule ....

I’d read online the following hence my concerns

Am I allowed to buy a car in Spain?

Broadly speaking, if you’re registered as a resident in Spain you’re entitled to buy a car. However, you need either to own a property or to be renting one for a minimum of one year.
