In April I hired a car from DICKMANNS  car rental at Alicante airport through DoYouSpain  (the agent) when we picked up the car I was told that because I would not take their exorbitantly priced  excess insurance (I have my own)I would have to leave a deposit of €950 ,most companies do this by just blocking it off your credit card and cancelling it when you return the car. Dickmanns however take the money into their bank account and tell you it will be refunded 28 days AFTER you return the car so if you add in the rental period they have had your money for 6 weeks already but it does not end there.        After the 28 days I contacted them to ask where my refund was they told me it was 28 working days so 28 working  days later I again emailed (they wait 72 hours to reply) to be told "they had passed it to accounts" and so it went on for days and days countless phone calls and emails other excuses were " we are very busy" " the person who deals with it at the bank is ill" fortunately 8 weeks later I was back in Alicante and drove go their  head office  in Torrevieja where after much discussion my money was refunded 2 days later.                                                                                         Think long and hard before you rent from DICKMANNS !!!!!

Interesting story. And helpful. I booked once through DoYouSpain, not Dickmans I'm glad to say. But then I discovered Centauro, good cars, deposit always returned immediately and crucially much quicker service in the arrivals terminal.

It's not Just Dickmanns, they are all the same . Also there is 'Do it Spain ' they in themselves are as bad , be very very careful when renting with these rental companies, do your home work !, need I say more.

Always did my car hire through Dickmanns but not any more as their refund system is awful I now rent with a company that blocks your money rather than actually takes it as I don't incur any charges I do a yearly car hire insurance at home and I travel out nearly every month

Hi

I rented a car on the 19th May from Dickmans also through Do You Spain and returned it 2nd June and I have not had my 950 Euros refunded yet, I have sent 3emails to them with no response, and I have also contacted Do You Spain 3 times. They say they are getting in touch with Dickmans but that was 1 week ago and not heard anything since from them. Phoned Dickmans in Spain yesterday and they gave me the same story about 28 days, so still waiting for my money which they have had for coming up to 6weeks!!! So Beware and dont rent from Dickmans.

Is there a Spanish equivalent of Trading Standards who might look into it??

P.s.I have used Centauro about 5 times now and they have been great. DoYouSpain seem to be aptly named!

I think they prey on the fact that their customer base is predominantly foreign tourists and it is difficult to for them to exert any pressure whilst they are so far away and probably would not how to seek advice or help from  the Spanish equivalent of citizens advice bureau.           But it's amazing how their attitude changes when you show up on their doorstep.

Last week I picked up a car in Alicante airport from Autoclick (booked through Do You Spain). They block but don't take the 900+ Euros and fuel charge but when you return the car FULL they let you go and NO charges appear on the credit card. They are off site from the airport but the pick up and drop off were excellent. This also means you don't have a large credit amount on your card credit. The car hire hire cost me 22 Euro for 5 days and that is all that has ever appeared on my card.

Sounds like one of the fairer companies as far as car hire companies in Spain go. However I note you stated the "block" the 900+ euros and full charges. It's still as disgusting tactic that has gone on for many years and these companies need to be held to account . They represent everything that is wrong about tourism in Spain and should be closely looked at by the European Union..... Yes we are still members and have rights!.

Some friends of mine were stitched up only last week by do you Spain, they had there own insurance cover , but on arrival to collect the car they were forced to take out the car hire company insurance otherwise they would not have got there car, plus wheel trims and the ariel were removed from the car , need I say more.
