Hi All,

I am thinking of moving to the Villa Martin area or Torrevieja, which is the quietest area along with ex pats?

I also wanted to ask about driving, I wanted to know if it was easy to pick up the right hand driving? would it be better to buy a car there or drive your own over?

Thank you

David

Villa Martin is definitely a lot quieter than Torrevieja and has plenty of expats of several nationalities. You will definitely need a car if you choose Villa martin as its a good distance from the beach area, you might find it difficult to park at the beach area during summer. My sister lives on Villamartin and I find the place to quiet and very hilly in places.

I've always thought it better to buy a car that suits the country where you are living as it suits the road conditions and layout.

Is the car you have now in the UK? If so then it could be expensive to bring itno the EU, better check the costs involved first before making a decision.

There are no real problems with driving a RHD drive car in Spain, I have driven one over here for 8 years now and the only accident I have was someone drivng into the back of my car!

If you are going to buy a car here in Spain then LHD would be the preferred option.

Rgds,

AItch.

You get used to driving over here. You need to apply to change your driving license to a Spanish one when you arrive. If temporary visiting then you can drive on a UK license for up to 6 months but if moving permanently then apply to exchange it as soon as you have residency as it can take some time for UK DVLC to confirm your right to drive. A EU license can be used until it expires but needs to be exchanged before it actually does run out.

The only problems with a RHD car can occur at car parks and tolls if you don't have a passenger with you. It can also be a bit awkward to see around lorries or whatever when you want to overtake but I drove a RHD over here for some time with not too many problems.

The Spanish driving license is one of the most difficult and hard ones to obtain but it seems they have forgotten everything once they have passed it. Foreign drivers seem to get into the same mindset as well and tailgating, speeding, picking any convenient lane on a roundabout etc seems rife. Just remember if you hit a car on its right hand side when negotiating a roundabout you will be at fault. Hit him on the left and it's his fault. Same with bikes, the car driver will always be at fault regardless.

Villamartin has been built up quite a lot lately. Used to be for golfers at certain times and quite dead at others but more and more properties have been built and it's quite busy all the time now. Not many shops for things, though, and you'll need a car to get to other places. Not a bad bus service to the beach with a round trip bus quite regularly in the Summer months but pretty infrequent if you want to go anywhere else.

Try looking at other places like La Mata or San Luis and so on.
