Travelling by car to Spain next week for 6 weeks, little concerned about having to carry passports around when we are driving around Torrevieja going down beach, shops, days out etc.

Has anyone ever been stopped and asked to produce their passport?.

Can i use photocopy?

There is no reason for you to carry passports with you when doing everyday tasks, why would  anybody ask to see them?

Hi

In 10 years, I have never need asked for ID outside of visits to officialdom, or buying a car etc.

If you are unlucky enough to be stopped, a copy is OK, but it must be "validated" and stamped by a notary - I keep one in my car.

Cheers

Steve

It is actually a Spanish law that foreigners must carry their passports at all times. I've been here 7 years and never been asked for mine.

Hi

Did it at my local notary, cost around 15 euros. Look for one close to you. Simply ask them to make a notarized copy of your passport.

Cheers

I have been asked for my ID once.

A bored bobby stopped me, for no apparent reason, and asked for ID.

I was on my way to the beach, so I didn't have it (I had the car key and enough money for family ice creams).

I was told off, but allowed to go on my way.

I have driven in Spain for 20 years,

been stopped numerous times, even on quad bikes

and never been  asked for my passport,

car documents and licence only.
