Hi everyone.

Does anybody know the rules concerning V5 registration document on a UK car.

I am buying a large car from a friend to hopefully drive over at the end of the month. Its taking longer to get it ready than agreed and i am getting short of time. My car has a tiny boot and will not be practical. My solicitor is asking for a completion date.

I have read its compulsory to have the V5 with me. Does the V5 have to be in my name ?. We can do the transfer online, and in theory the new V5 should be with me in time. But if it does not arrive in time then i am stuck. If we do the transfer online, he is supposed to destroy the old V5.

I will also have to find out if its ok to take the car on the ferry if the V5 is not in my name.

Does anybody know the answers ?.

Thanks.

It takes no more than 3 days to receive a new log book if you do a change of ownership on line

That would be awesome if its correct, but a couple grand down the drain if not. Decisions, decisions.

It is correct. I did it last week with the wife's car. DVLA has strict timelines it has to adhere to turnaround things. 72 hr is the target

For the record nobody from any ferry company will either know or care to whom a car is registered and to drive it all you need is the V5 and a signed receipt of some sort from the previous owner to prove it's not been stolen.

Hi JohnS,

I brought a car out a couple of years ago. The ferry company are not interested and in all that time the only time I've had to show it was when I got an ITV (MOT) and was transferring it onto Spanish plates.

I'm bringing a lease car out in the summer, I don't own it as it's the lease companies. They have told me they issue a duplicate V5 which will be sufficient, and they do this all the time.

Thanks for all the replies. Hopefully will get the car over the weekend, was supposed to be ready last month. Have told him its the weekend or not at all. If it happens, will do the transfer online, but keep the old V5 just in case. That should cover all bases. Will let you you know how i get on for future reference.

Got the car today and did the transfer online this morning. Will let you know when the V5 arrives so you know the timescale.

Had a nightmare this morning with Esure over the green card. They tried to charge me £70, for something that their own website says they will issue free of charge.

I should probably start a new post, to warn everyone about unscrupulous insurance companies, that are trying to take advantage of the confusion surrounding brexit. Maybe when i calm down.

Do not pay for a green card, its free. They have not updated their system, or explained to the staff the facts. Anyone with Esure, read the link below. It explains everything and is the ammunition you need to argue your case for a free green card.
