Leaving aside the potential insurance issues, once a vehicle is being used for hire or reward I would imagine a licence from the relevant authority is required? I know this is certainly the case in Ireland. Car sharing is the exception where a contribution can be accepted towards petrol etc however the registered owner of the vehicle has to be present. I spent 35 years in the insurance business and dealt with and declined numerous claims resulting from this practise.

If you lend your car or motorbike to a friend, best for you and your friend to fill in and sign the lending form (see the N332 website for the form, as I don't seem to be able to attach it), and get a copy of your ID, and importantly theirs  to attach to the completed form. This will avoid any issues with Traffico.

If the friend you lend the vehicle to refuels it, can that be seen as a payment?

If you lend your car to whoever, contributing towards petrol costs is permitted but asking for a contribution towards wear and tear of the car is not permitted.  I am part of a car pooling group run by Seguro Car Rentals but I, as the lead contract person,  must forward details of the driving licence to Seguro for any person who drives the car.

Thanks Bee, really helpful.

Always worry about when friends come over and I lend them my car or a bike, about the legalities of everything. Especially if they get stopped by the Police, but all clear now. Thanks again.

This post that was quoted has been deleted.

Aside from the legalities and insurances etc, could be an issue for tax liabilities and unearned/passive income.

Yes Ada11 sounds very practical. I see that "Mini" have a scheme like that in Spain for anyone who owns a Mini. It is already operating in UK.
