Transfer of car insurance?

I am in the process of moving back to the Uk and am considering buying a UK registered vehicle here to get me back. The car dealer says some companies will transfer the insurance onto your UK vehicle from my Spanish one and for up to 90 days when we get back. Does anyone know if this is correct and not a selling ploy? Just trying to get some information before making the next step. Also when selling my vehicle, can someone tell me the safest way to do so, not sure about private and or going to a dealer. Any factual information and tips would be helpful, thanks all.
