Hi we are In in the process of selling our property to move over and after a bit of advice on a vehicle we are thinking of buying . It's a Japanese import el grande we are getting this for the comfort of travelling and the space to bring our stuff what we need. my question is would this vehicle have to pay any taxes once we get there and how difficult would it be to change over to spainish plates once we are established thank you in advance Caz.

If your vehicle was not originally delivered within the EU, it won't have a certificate of conformity. This need not be a problem. It may be possible to have an engineer's report produced, to confirm that the car meets normal EU standards. From memory, this costs about 200 Euros.

We had a RHD (Japanese) Mercedes, but chose not to matriculate it on to Spanish plates. We found the RHD to be a bit of a pain.

We now have a LHD Honda (from the USA) which we will have matriculated.

Richard Easterbrook can facilitate the matriculation and advise on the engineer's report.

Thank you for the advice we spoke to the company who we are buying it from yesterday he seems to think it wouldn't be a problem either as other customers have done what we want to do without any problems. But will get my partner to speak to the person you have mentioned because I haven't got a clue when it comes to the ins and outs of cars he he. Thanks again kelvin.

You are welcome.

One other thing .... we chose not to matriculate our Mercedes because it was RHD and a big big. It was nearly 5.2 metres long, and it was too bulky for some car parks here, especially the underground car parks. It was also awkward with toll roads/car park barriers if driving alone.

When we bought it from the importer, there were El Grand cars there to look at. They were very nice (I applaud your choice) but they looked pretty big as well. Might be worth checking the dimensions.

Best wishes.

Yes.

We drove the Mercedes via Portsmouth/Bilbao.

Then a Luton van, same route.

After 4 months, we brought the Mercedes back (Santander/Portsmouth).

We will return with the Honda in a few weeks.
