If you're just visiting for holidays you may find that the TCO (Total Cost of Ownership) comes close to the cost of hiring.

TCO includes :

Capital outlay and depreciation

Insurance

Maintenance (older cars will need more)

Road tax (SUMA)

Airport parking(?)

Carefully do the sums before assuming ownership is the most cost effective option.

No where near…. Have you priced rental recently? It can be close to a thousand pounds a month.

Yep buy, we just did.

Our friends TCO idea didn’t include the fact that you still have a car to sell on at some point in the future.

second hand small cars are very expensive, even for very old ones, there has to be a good reason for that… they are on high demand.

Go to Frank at FWReurocars, a real gent, recommended by many and although can be hard to find what you need he is genuinely very knowledgeable and helpful. Worth the trip to Alicante 👍

Like many, we used to hire up until 3 years ago but found the price of car hire rocketed up then and obviously continues do so. We bought a 2nd hand car for around the €5000 mark when we decided not to hire anymore and we’ve never regretted it. There are a lot of bargains about but buy from a reputable garage who will complete all the relevant paperwork for you. Happy car hunting if you decide to buy.

Regards

  Jim

Thanks for your advice Jim.We too have been hiring cars for 3 years now & like many have had enough of the massive hike in rental cars so buying seems like a good option. Thanks again

It depends how often you visit per year. Before we became resident we used to bring an old car from the UK and left it in our garage in Spain, returning it each year for the MOT. We used Spanish tourist car insurance and taxed the car while in Spain. We visited for periods of couple of months each way. It was a pain returning the car to the UK each year but we turned it into a holiday drive and spent a lot of time in France.

2nd hand cars are very expensive compared to prices in UK but on the upside they don't tend to rust as much. We found that service costs and road tax are cheaper than the UK, as is the car insurance which includes breakdown. Airport parking looks very reasonable and, as the insurance is for the car & any driver over 25, you can let members of you family use it.

Great advice thank you.we have already been over 4 times so buying a car would seem cheaper in the long run I think
