I must begin by saying that, in general, I have little problem with this company, other than being shocked how much they wanted for full cover insurance the first time I used them.  Since then I have bitten the bullet and paid up, with trouble free and stress free hirings as a result.  Until this week....

I paid the usual "comfort" insurance which basically covers everything, no questions asked and also paid an extra REFUNDABLE 107 euros to cover the full to full policy on fuel.  I returned the car (to Alicante airport) on Monday after a three week hire to find they have only given me 59 euros back, with no explanation.  I know I am only talking about a relatively small amount of money but it is the principle of the thing.  I feel cheated out of 48 euros and I have emailed them three times this week with no response.  I know I can phone them but what is the point in spending money on what will undoubtedly be a long and expensive call (from the UK)?  I am back there on the 31st May and will take it up with them at their desk if I hear nothing in the meantime.

Has anyone else been short-changed in this manner?  If so I would be interested to hear your views.  There have been so many complaints about them but, as I said, I have had no previous trouble with them.  They won't be getting any more business from me which will be their loss seeing as I am going to be going back and forth fairly regularly from now on.

Next time try Lara Cars at Alicante Airport or La Marina Urb. Meet and greet at arrivals. No extras.

Yep, same thing happened to me with Goldcar. I think its so common you have to assume its pretty much policy to take customers money for anything and everything.

Like you the amount we got refunded for fuel did not match what we deposited. Even worse they also deducted €110 for roadside assistance call out even though it was included in our booking with Holiday Autos.

Ive been arguing the toss ever since, not least coz GC gave me a zero balance statement in an email subsequent to drop off then deducted the amounts next day.

HA are playin a blinder fallin for GCs lies and both are fobbing me off. HA keep sayin they are waiting for some mystery ‘document’ from GC but wont tell me what it is. Its BS; theyre just covering for their corporate partner!

No matter; Itd potentially credit card fraud  ive now opened a  ‘card transaction challenge’ with my Credit card company so they can join in the fight.

Ive also pointed out that free roadside assistance is whats offered by HA, but that this doesnt square with the fact that GC charge €110 automatically for the callout no matter what the outcome, and that since the two dont reconcile, thats something for them to fight over and meanwhile HA should refund me or get it off GC.

Then when the dust has settled Ill reflect HAs behaviour in the worst reviews theyve ever seen plus after 40 years of using them ill never do so again.

As for GC, they can stick their car hire up where the sun dont shine; Dealing with crooks isnt one of my hobbies!!

Roadside assistance is mandatory in Spain and I believe is normally included in car insurance. The cover the car hire companies try to sell you is to recover the car if the incident is your fault, strange really as you would think they would want their car back!

Coming to the conclusion that car hire isn't really worth the hassle if it is just for airport and back, and local runs to shops, beaches etc  (we did plenty of that in our last three week stay).  It worked out at around £18 per day and some days we didn't use it at all.  I think future trips will utilise the ALC-Tv coach, taxis, local buses and our yet to be purchased bikes!

I don't mind paying for good service but I don't like being ripped off and, it seems, it's hard to avoid that when dealing with car hire companies.  I know there are exceptions but it's too much of a coincidence that so many people have complaints about them.

Oooh that sounds nice.  I used to drive a Jaguar XJ6 when employed as a private hire driver for a couple of years and found it an absolute pleasure to drive.  Better than the others in the fleet (BMW and Merc).

Are you part of an official hire car company making this offer?

Michelle?  Is that aimed at me?

If so, a couple of postings seem to have been removed from this thread, regarding jaguars and armour plated vehicles!

Rdudden:  your two replies from last night seem to have disappeared but, in case you were wondering, I'm not interested in taking up your offer of the hire of your Jag.  Very nice of you to offer but no thanks!
