Hi everyone, we have booked ferry 18/09 for 1st time to visit our home, we are looking for a travel route to avoid Madrid and some tolls, also looking for recommendation for overnight stay approx. halfway if anyone has driven the route and can offer advice it would be greatly appreciated

You can avoid Madrid or tolls, but not both. Via Madrid is less stressing. When approaching Madrid follow the M50 and leave on exit 31 joining the A3 (ignore R·3 tollroad). No tolls and affordable lodging every +/- 50 kms.

I travelled from Santander to Cabo Roig in March - fantastic drive. 

I stayed at La Bodega de Quintin, in the town of Villarego de Salvanes - just off the E-901 (South of Madrid).

I booked on booking.com and was £55 per night, travelling to Cabo Roig and then again on return trip.

I only went through one-toll on the entire journey, on the outskirts of Madrid - from memory only a few euros.

Depends on time of arrival at Santander. If late then Burgos is around 2 hours and then drive straight through to Vilamartin.  If early and 2 of you share driving, then do it in one.
