I have come across a Petition, that is very important for owners that are not residents. If you know anyone that this affects, then please let them know, so they can sign petition.

Lobby to negotiate equal visa rights for U.K. citizens with property in EU area

Lobby the government to negotiate equal rights for U.K. citizens with properties in EU countries to those automatically awarded to EU citizens staying in the U.K., ie, 180 days in any 365 days. Not 2 x 90 day blocks as per current Schengen rules.

At the moment the U.K. government has granted EU citizens the right to reside in the U.K. for up to 180 days without a visa. By Schengen rules (which now apply to U.K. citizens as a “third country”) U.K. residents are only permitted to stay in their property in an EU territory for 90 days (including travel days) then leave the Schengen area for another 90 days before they return. In my opinion this was an abdication of the U.K. government’s responsibility to its citizens. Many of whose invested heavily in EU properties & who are now denied the right to use them as they choose.

As far as I am aware the UK does not belong to the Schengen area so have no part in their rules..   If you know when they joined please let me know.

I can't see where they said ".....in Schengen.....".  The words they use, "By Schengen rules (which now apply to U.K. citizens as a “third country”) U.K. residents....." appear to be lifted directly from the petition itself.   Although it doesn't affect me, I've signed it in support of the many holiday homes owners who are affected by this disparity.

Good luck!

Kind regards,

Kim

The 90 day rule affects me and I saw this petition elsewhere too.

What I don't understand is why they're petitioning the UK government with this. The UK government allow EU residents 180 days stay already. We need to petition the EU or Spain directly as its they who set the rules for their own countries.

Yes that too but it's in the power of the UK government to ask for and negotiate this.

Fair point Graeme, I just can't see the UK government having any interest in doing that. They want us here spending our money to help the economy recover.

I'm hoping Spain will relax the rule as Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus and Romania do.

If Spain wants our money they'll need to let us in.

Let's face it though, the UK government has not got any power for negotiations now and never had so I wouldn't expect anything!!!
