Hi Just wondering has anymore information been given by the Spanish government over British people moving to Spain. I heard the required amount was £24000 and health insurance was required even when at pention age. Is this still the case or have things changed as health insurance costs after age 65 is very expensive and not sure most pensioners could afford this.

Hi Robbie,

The actual income requirements are, for the first person €27,115.20 then for each additional person, (wife or close member) an additional €6,778.80. So for a couple it's around €34,000. Saving will also be considered.

If you are a UK pensioner you will be entitled to get your healthcare through the S1 healthcare cover but it will only be sent to your Spanish address once you are a fully legal resident. So for your initial application you will need Private healthcare paid for a full year.

Having explained that, your initial request to move permanently to Spain will have to be made through the Spanish embassy in the UK. You will need to apply for a non lucrative visa which, if granted will allow you to move over to Spain and it will give you a month to apply for residency.

When you get residency you can apply to the Overseas healthcare team at Newcastle for your S1 healthcare form and then your healthcare will be paid by the UK government.

Best of luck

Steve

Hi tebo53 thanks for your reply, I thought the free health care form wasn't allowed from 01 Jan 2021 as we left the EU and that was part of us being in the EU was told anyone already resident before that date was ok but after that it would not count. I will look in to it again as for a lot of people that would make a massive difference.

Thanks

Robbie

Yes, I'll hold my hands up high and admit I gave incorrect information regarding the S1. It is not now available to new applicants unless its under the withdrawal agreement.

However....all is not lost because after your first full year of living legally in Spain you can apply to join the Convenio Especial which is a way to get full cover with the Spanish Healthcare services. Once your application is accepted you will receive Healthcare as any Spanish national would. There is a monthly fee which if you are over 65 would be about €157 per month.

Yes I thought so this is what will stop a lot moving as €157 each is too much for most pensioners as that's £266 a month from pention for a couple. Think both the UK pensioners and Spanish government will lose out. That's a pity most will now be looking at other countries to live in now.

Thanks

So, for those relocating post Brexit, are UK pensioners still entitled to free medical treatment? if not in Spain by exporting their benefit are they able to fly back to the UK if necessary?

Is healthcare in the UK residency based even for pensioners who haven't exported the benefit? I thought once people became of pensionable age they became entitled to free healthcare in the UK.

Even the Americans provide free healthcare to pensioners I think, though I've not researched this.

Hi Robbie,

That was originally the case.  However, the Trade and Co-operation Agreement, signed by the UK on 24 December 2020 and ratified by the EU in February 2021, confirms the continued availability of the S1 for UK citizens moving to the EU after Brexit (similarly, the agreement allows for uprating of UK State pensions).

Kind regards,

Kim

Hi Lancelot,

Please see my reply to the OP.  Prior to signing the Trade and Co-operation Agreement, the advice was that UK pensioners moving to the EU post-Brexit would no longer be able to receive S1 funded healthcare or receive increases to their State pension.  This latter agreement confirms the ongoing availability of both.

Kind regards,

Kim

Does anyone know how this works with new style self invested pensions. I moved out of a final salary pension to a self invested personal pension. I now have a pension pot to use through retirement . How do you actually evidence affordability in this situation   - is there a minimum pot you need to have ? Or would you be  showing  that you can afford to drawdown from your pot,  €34000 euros per annum ( for wife and I ),  for x number of years ? Thanks.
