There are always two queues (three if you have to drop your bag off, of course). The first through security, the second through passport control. However, both are quick. It is a well-run airport.

Bit of a lash up when I travelled a few weeks ago, sailed through security looked at the departure info, it was showing go through passport control as the flight was departing from a B gate, the problem started when the plane arrived and parked at a C gate, border control would not let us back through as they were saying as we had gone through passport control/ border security we had technically left Spain. Eventually we were let back through border control to get to our C gate. All this messing about meant we were over an hour late leaving Alicante.

In over 20 years no problem getting through the airport however in March there was an issue. I need Special Assistance and they were short of staff, when eventually help arrived I was taken right to the gate as the plane was boarding so no time to get a drink etc even though we arrived 2 hours before departure. Generally it is ok so hopefully next time will be back to normal.
