How can this happen?  I have just been scared to death (I know, totally irrational) by the appearance of a very lively cockroach next to my pedal bin in the kitchen.  It had better be the only one, a leftover from last summer, because I can't abide them in the house.  Last July, when I was here for a week, I found at least one a day, mostly downstairs but one or two upstairs.

This trip has lasted just over six weeks so far and there have been none at all, no ants, no mozzies, no cockroaches - until now.  I'm a nervous wreck again.  I know it's stupid but it really did catch me unawares.  I had just finished washing up and was putting something in the pedal bin which caused me to move the bin slightly and it just shot out, at speed, did a circuit around the bin and back under it.  Needless to say I grabbed something solid, moved the bin again and luckily this action tipped the blighter onto its back.  It had no chance then and one cockroach was despatched quick time.

I really don't understand what it is doing in my house at this time of year and, of course, I will, in the morning, go over the floors carefully with the special cleaning fluid and then will put some of the traps down that I bought not expecting to need them until next summer.  Has anyone else had a visit in recent weeks?

Michael (heart rate just about back to normal now!)

Hi Michael,

I had to chuckle as the blighters are always around, they just go to warmer hidey holes in the winter so you will see the occasional one.

We have the Mercadona cucaracha traps in the house all year round and seems to do the trick.

I can't stand the dirty critters but am getting better. Try telling that to my other half when one starts flying and I'm wailing like a screaming banshee! Lol!

P.S. Dont forget to leave the mince pie and mulled wine out for it on Christmas eve:)

Flying?  They fly??????  God almighty, I can’t stand it!  I was paranoid every day last July expecting to see one every time I moved up or down stairs but was nice and relaxed this time....until now!

After breakfast in the morning the floors are getting disinfected and those Mercadona traps are going down.  How do they work by the way?  Is there some kind of poison inside them?

Can I deduce from your name that you have a cat by the way?  If so, are they any good as a deterrent?  Presumably not.  This kind of thing gets me thinking more and more about paying the estate agent a call and bailing out.  Extreme reaction, I know, but the way things are going it might be worth considering .  I have been considering it these last few weeks, definitely 😟

Hi,

Yes the traps have a poison in them so when they walk through the trap it poisons them and they die :)

No we don't have a cat.......we have several! Lol! Yes , they are a good deterrent as they kill lots but obviously torture them before they do.

Selling up is extreme and cockroaches are part of living in a warm climate but you can keep them to a minimum with what you are doing. Do you have any empty properties near you as theses would attract them? If you're still worried after you've laid your traps, etc call in a pest control company.

I’ve had a few bites this trip of the non-itching variety.  Presumably the tiny black flies which are few in numbers but still active.

Lucky you not seeing a cockroach.  I know they can’t bite me but I really don’t want to be in the same room as one!

I’m in one of those Calles that go off the street at right angles with ten houses each side of a gravelled area.  Of those I think there are 2 or 3 occupied all the time and the rest only occasionally.  I’ve got a permanent resident one side but on the other side it’s been empty all of the time for at least two years.  Maybe they breed in there?

I’ve not been thinking of selling because of cockroaches but it’s not really worked out as we expected.  I’ve had quite a few trips here, being retired, while my partner rarely gets the chance to come because she’s still working.  It’s just a thought at the moment.

Hello Michael

I'm not sure that cockroaches know what time of year it is ha!  Like madcatwoman, I still get one in  every couple of weeks during the colder months. I know where they come in ( inaccessible to me) so have a thin dusting of boric acid in that area & often they are dead when I find them though some still manage to side step the powder .They walk in the powder, clean their feet & die - brilliant! & yes they do  fly....

Good Luck with your deterrents

Cheers

Be grateful it wasnt a spider. My only true lifelong fear. Creepy crawlies dont bother me but spiders, different story. Haha
