Can anyone give me a clue as to why there were hundreds of dead flies in my property when it's been locked up for four months. I was told to leave some olive oil in the plug holes while away as this helps stop the water evaporating from the traps. Any thoughts please.

What size are they - large  (like the UK description of bluebottle) or tiny?

Tiny black ones, they were all in the downstairs bathroom and bedroom.

I can't comment on the olive oil advice although my guess is it might actually attract them, dunno.

However - before you leave next time, run plenty cold water through all the taps. Then pour a fair bit of bleach into the plug holes. Leave for 10 minutes and then flush through with more cold water. Then put plugs into all the sinks. If your shower is above bath put that plug in too. If it's a stand alone shower cover the drain. See if that stops it.

But if you don't already have one find a food particle strainer for your kitchen sink and use it when you empty the sink as it will prevent any nice snacks remaining in the pipes while you're not there.

I've had the same even though I always leave all plugs in. I now use some gaffer tape and cover up all overflow holes when I go and it solved the problem.

I was told they were drain flies which happens when there is no flowing water going through the system.

Yes, these are drain flies and they come up from the sewage drains when there is no water blocking them.  I would not recomend putting olive oil or any oils in your drains, the oil will turn hard and solid when it gets cold and could cause severe blockages.  I have been using for the past 10 years the pest control company Control Natural de Plagas. I've used them for these type of flies and cockroaches. They are extremely professional and speak English. The number I have for them is 692863608.
