The title says it all. Its a belief. Even people who claim to have crossed to 'the other side' and come back cannot be sure their experience was real. If you have a nightmare it's a real as if it was actually happening so any experience could just be in your mind or it could be real. There are of course many strange things that happen which we still don't yet understand. Imagine showing Television to King Arthur. He would deem you a better magician than Merlin but it was just that no one had yet discovered all the things that could make it work.
There is no doubt that many of the things that we don't now understand will be uncovered in the future. If it exists the afterlife may be proved or not.....depending on what you believe.
Personally I prefer to keep an open mind. There is only one way to find out for sure and hopefully I'm not quite ready for that yet.
