The answer really depends on your holiday requirements, so what makes me happy with Torrevieja and the area I live in may not suit what you'd like out of holidaying here.

Anyway, I live fairly close to Torreta 2.  There are many properties that are "cheap", with quite a few between €50k to €70k.  The commercial strip here has a good mix of Spanish/UK bars including Irish with most of them doing food.  Also, one Brit bar has a large swimming pool open to the public (daily fee).

There's a fairly large supermarket, a couple of Todo Ciens, and many restaurants including British, Indian, Chinese, Italian.  There's a Farmacia too.  (And even a sex shop😳)

And only a short walkable distance away you have the Carrefour Hypermarket, the Habaneras shopping mall, 🎳 bowling alley, cinema plus several other restaurants.   It's not too far into town, walkable or about 10 minutes cycling and a bus service as well.

Torrevieja is very Cosmopolitan and can be as Spanish as you wish.

I started coming to Torrevieja 40 years ago and now live here permanently - I still love the place.

When you say you are just looking for a bolthole "at the moment" you need to be aware that the costs involved in buying and selling are high and because there are thousands of properties for sale it could take you a very long time to sell if you are not happy with it.
In previous posts I can see that you have asked about several areas which is all well and good, we've all been there, but nothing can beat taking a rental, hiring a car and finding out for yourself. Only then start looking for property within your preferred area.

We lived in the Torre area for a few years and the place has pretty much everything you will need. It is a nice place. We are where we are now because we wanted more space.

The biggest problem we have found is the once you get yourself into the Spanish system life ceases to be straightforward and it's very difficult to get out. As someone has already pointed out the new 90 day rule is an absolute killer.

We are now trapped because we can't sell the place and even if we could, we would get far less then we originally paid for it.

Without going into loads of details my best recommendation is NOT to buy anything . RENT SOMETHING

The points here being, you can give it back when you get fed up and want to go home and when you come back you can go to another area if you didn't like where you were.

I'm guessing that trying to rent in EU would be even worse. So where are you looking now?

As other have said, rent first. It's far easier to look for bargains while you have feet on the ground and you're less likely to make mistakes. Do be aware that buying & selling costs can be around 20% if you make a mistake and need to sell & buy somewhere else.

Spanish property is not usually the investment that UK property can be, so make it a life style choice.

Good luck
