Hi there

Well i am in the process of selling my house with an agreed sale now on the table. I am thinking of going to Spain and by listening to a lot of reports on Torrevieja it sound like the place to be, although i have never been!

I would appreciate any recommendations that can be given, such as what my first steps should be etc. Obviously as soon as restrictions are lifted i will fly over to have a recky!

Thanks

Jonathan

Depend on what you're looking for!

Torre is an expat and holiday hot spot (not just Brit) which can be a blessing or a curse.

For a lot of people being close to the beach heads their list but that can quickly wear thin in the summer when the world and his dog are there vying for a m2 of space, also with much holiday accommodation and bars etc. close to the beach it can be noisy and rowdy almost 24/7.

Btw you say "going to Spain", if that means to live then I presume you are familiar with what that now from today?

Have you checked out the new requirements for living in Spain? Can you meet the income and healthcare requirements for living in the Valencia area?

Yet again, referring to other people with differing views as 'idiots'. Will you ever get over this?

Whatever side of the debate/referendum/result/opinion....please move on. Stamping your feet, taking your ball back, throwing your rattle out of the pram, throwing insults.....it really doesn't do you any favours.

And there was me thinking we were all 'adults' and being 'responsible', what an 'idiot' I turned out to be.

Hello

Hardly a helpful reply. The OP who asked the question, may have voted years ago for the UK to leave the EU, & now, being in possession of all the facts, may have decided to leave himself! Hardly an idiot, I would suggest he is quite wise. The hoops to jump through may have got bigger & multiplied, but if he is able & determined to do it, good luck to him.

Cheers

Elinspain.

Hi. When you say Torrevieja do you mean the town itself or are you including the general area?  The town is a working Spanish town and a holiday resort. Just to the south is Orihuela Costa, a mainly international ex pat area. Both have all the amenities you need for full time living. Head inland and you have a choice of Spanish towns or ex pat urbanisation. So it depends what you want.

Obviously budget comes into play. Where and what you buy will be partly dependent on how much you have to spend on the property.

Obviously, as others have mentioned, you will need to qualify under the rules for 3rd country applications to live in Spain.

Best advice, visit for a month and have a good look around. Ask questions of residents you meet.

Good morning Jonny77.

Wow!  You have pretty well sold your home and now you want to move to Spain to live, that’s something!

My advice for what it’s worth

1) property values in U.K. keep rising and your investment is worthwhile. Not so in Spain. If you really want to buy, divide your proceeds from your house and buy a property in the UK ( keep for your own use or consider renting) Consider renting before buying. Everyone says this and for good reason, know the area of your choice.

2) I don’t know your age, your interests, marital state etc.,  This is vital to your choice.

3) Do you want to live in a coastal area?

4) will you need to work or are you retired and on receipt of a good pension?

OK.  You know the answers to all of the above so that will determine the direction you take.

Locations.   Top of the lust LA MATA.  On the outskirts of Torrevieja, originally a little fishing village I think, it boasts a coastline of natural sandy beach, it’s on the level so perfect for walking. Good restaurants and all facilities, excellent bus service running every 20 minutes into Torrevieja. It’s only a half hour from Alicante Airport. There’s a fantastic boardwalk from La Mata taking you quite a distance towards Torrevieja then a short walk along the footpath and along the road to the rocky coastline which takes you to Los Locas ( another delightful beach area) and onwards to Torrevieja!  Coffee shops, restaurants and bars enroute to stop and relax. It’s idyllic and I love the whole area.

Another very important thing to factor in...FLOOD AREAS..... do NOT BUY anyway that floods. There are areas that flood and bring devastation and destruction to houses and properties.

Apartments are great but...

who lives upstairs or downstairs and parties all the time? Someone comes in late while you are asleep and turns their tv on !  A nightmare and you have no control as to who buys it sells or comes to live in that block .

I’m not trying to put you off , I’m simply pointing out some of the pitfalls.

Look for a place with car parking , storage, a place for a clothesline, lots of sun on your patio ( south facing). Within walking distance to the sea, good air con , preferably a living room that can be heated easily in winter ( no stairs coming into room)

I could continue on but won’t. You must work this out for yourself. Please think carefully what it is that you need or want.

I wish you all the very best and trust you will be wise in your decisions.  Good hunting.

Oh course it’s daunting for you but we are here to help you!

Please keep a home in the U.K. in an area that you like. Spain in the summer is EXTREMELY HOT and unless you plan to sit by the sea all day long, you will have to stay indoors with the air on on. Not great. You could buy a smaller place on the coast or near loved ones and return home and enjoy a lovely British summer /autumn and then return fir winter sunshine. If you choose to become a resident, you will have to pay for private health care until you reach retirement age. Tax allowance is poor compared with U.K. so financially you will have less income. I believe you pay for prescriptions but not too bad.

Should you decide to keep your British status and free health care, that will be fine BUT if you do not become a resident, you can only stay for 90 days returning home for another 90 days and then permitted another 90 days back in Spain. This may alter so keep an eye on the forum for information.

If you can cope with this, then fine and if not then apply for residency. However, if you happen to have been born anywhere in Ireland or a parent or Grandparent, you can apply for an Irish passport and have no worries about the 90 day rule as Ireland is in the EU.

You have plenty to think about now. Please keep in touch and let us know what you plan to do. Cheers
