Can anyone help us? My wife and I are over here on the S1 so am on public health system. Recently my wife has been in pain with a twisted spine, diagnosed by a chiropractor. She saw a Dr in our village twice and he only gave her pain killers.

She really needs an x-ray and proper diagnosis. We are in Algorfa, only one small medical centre .The Dr seems to be not listening to her . Is there any way we can go to another medical centre on the S1 for her to see a different Dr. She can now hardly walk and does not want it to get any worse.

How can we get a Dr to refer her for an X-ray.? She has no confidence in this Dr here.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

You are not able to go to another GP practice (unless you go private) but you can request to change GPs at the one you are registered with. You need to give a reason so you could say you have lost confidence in your current one.

Reception will have the necessary form to request this change. Of course, you'd have to start all over again with a new one. The option of a private consultation is still open to you for about 40 euro for a consultation which would at least put your mind at rest.

Surprising your GP hasn't referred your wife. I went to ours (in Quesada) with my second bout of sciatica and, after giving me meds, immediately referred me for X Rays on my spine which I got an appointment for 2 days later (not my spine, I'm just an old git with not enough exercise).

Thanks so much for your help. We are going to go back and insist on an X-ray. We will also try a private Dr for peace of mind.

If we get no joy, we will take your advice and ask to change Dr.

Thanks again for your help, it is much appreciated.

If I were in your position I would attend the Accident and Emergency Unit of your nearest public hospital. There, staff will take the necessary action to have your wife properly examined. I have done this myself when not satisfied with my GP.

I agree, my husband did this recently when the GP said he had conjunctivitis but he knew he had metal in his eye. Result? He had metal in his eye which was removed at the hospital.

Thanks so much. Yes if no joy from the Dr, heading off to local hospital A&E department.

You say the doctor speaks english, but to the level of a translator? I would suggest going with a translator.

Also the translator will help with the underplaying of pain that we Brits are often guilty of.

We tend to say "it's not too bad" when a Spaniard would say that the pain is terrible. The doctor will take that at face value.

He/she may not have liked it that you went with a diagnosis from a chiropractor.

Good luck,

Cheers, J
