Hi Gemily,

I understand you're quoted statement - but please bear in mind others have posted here who do know UK prices and none have agreed that it's 60% cheaper in the UK.

I went on to post prices of a wide range of fruit and vegetables that I purchased at very good prices for here.  I'm not that stupid to realise that the UK equivalent, even without being there for some time, would be 60% cheaper.  Impossible, absolutely impossible.

I don't want to have a spat with you Gemily - honest, but I'm very defensive of my adopted Homeland despite all it's many faults.

I wish you well,

Janet.

Why don't you people read my comments I said an equivalent shop and you've started a spat but I shall now end it, I do not make stories up so you can believe hearsay if you wish I'm not that bothered I know what the price of shopping was when I was in the UK not Bedford not London but up in Lancashire and it was at least 60% cheaper than hear, so unless you have experienced the shopping over Xmas I suggest you do not make reference to my own experience and infer I am telling lies.

Keep safe and enjoy your life here as I am doing.

Hi all,

I've signed a petition that´s currently running on Change.org, about the lack of action by the Spanish government in relation to the increasing cost of petrol and diesel - it's in Spanish, but here's a translation, along with a link to sign the petition, should you wish to do so:

"The price of gasoline has skyrocketed and families and small businesses are on the verge of ruin. Poland, France and Portugal have already taken measures, what are we waiting for in Spain? ENOUGH NOW!

"Let no one choose between heating or hot food: Less taxes on fuels!

"I can't turn on the boiler, so I use blankets to keep warm. I am almost 50 years old and I earn 400 euros a month. With that I cannot pay the cost of the diesel I need to heat my house. I don't have enough money to buy firewood, so I've been taking cold showers for months." This was told to me by Maria, a resident of Madrid who has been condemned to poverty by the rise in fuel prices. While prices continue to rise uncontrollably, the Government continues without providing solutions. Poland has eliminated VAT, France has lowered 15 cents per liter of gasoline, Portugal will adjust prices weekly, what are we waiting for in Spain?

"My husband and I are pensioners and, despite the fact that our pension increased by 2.5%, our quality of life has dropped due to the exorbitant prices of things as basic as fuel. To heat my house, I used to pay 0.77 a liter of diesel and now I pay 1.50 euros. We have gone from 231 euros to refill the deposit to 450... ALMOST DOUBLE!  For many families, this means having to choose between eating, showering their children or heating the food... Since the rise in prices began, I have not stopped knowing about cases like this and we need to do something NOW to avoid it. Sign this petition to ask the Government of Spain to immediately reduce fuel taxes by lowering VAT from 21% to 10% and lowering taxes on hydrocarbons to guarantee the rights of the most vulnerable families and businesses.

"In Spain we pay almost half the tax on fuel. This is assuming THE RUIN of families, freelancers, hairdressers, bars, farmers and small business owners. Meanwhile, the Treasury is entering more than 250 million a month due to the rise in fuel prices. We cannot allow that while families and small businesses are impoverished, the Government fills its coffers in this way. If we don't stop this soon, the consequences will come and more and more businesses will have to close and precariousness will spread to more and more sectors. With the rise in prices, State collection will continue to rise, but citizens will continue to pay more and more for basic products.

"I understand that it is necessary to collect taxes to have the public services that we all enjoy and guarantee our rights, but with this increase, the Government is collecting more money than foreseen in the General State Budgets at the expense of essential goods for many families. Despite the fact that the Government has announced that it will take measures for companies and businesses, we need to ensure that it also takes measures for families and individuals who use diesel boilers and many will be forced to choose between heating food or showering with hot water.

"It is intolerable that the most humble families pay for this crisis. Sign and share this petition and ask the Government to lower fuel taxes to match the prices we had before the outbreak of the War in Ukraine at least! We cannot allow families most vulnerable continue to be impoverished!

Kind regards,

Kim

I've just been shopping today after arriving at my apartment last night. Prices have gone up in Spain but I bought quite a lot and it came to 43€ which I didn't think was much more of an an increase than my last visit in October. I think you have to be canny and watch out for things that are over priced. So today in Aldi I saw a wedge of Grand padamo cheese it was 13.95€, I know for a fact in Sainsbury's UK its £2.95, so I thought I'm not paying that and went up to the meccadona where the same cheese was 3.50€. Whether someone had made a mistake???  Some may not have noticed the price and just put it in their trolley.

I found an old bill from last October and milk was 77cents whereas now its 80 cents. The worst is the hikes for fuel and electricity. Considering Spain can produce so much from Solar that seems to be profiteering. The crisis in oil and gas across the UK & the EU is a major concern especially for low income households and small business's which will have to pass on those cost to customers, which they will in turn buy less and some business's will fail. The oil giants are making vast profits on the backs of the average person. Shell made a comment only last week that their profits had risen so much they didn't know what to do with it. I could think of a few things, lower the prices to make it easier for the populations to live, instead of living in the dark, cold and not enough to eat, just basics. Business has to make profits but this is off the scale.

We've all been through a terrible pandemic for over 2 years affecting many people and now we have this. Governments need to make windfall taxes on the business's with these extrodinary profits. It simply isn't justifiable.

Today it was announced that the EU President Ursula Von der Leyen has overpaid 31 Billion euros to Pfizer for the vaccines. It really know no bounds the incompetence of the people in power. Meanwhile people are hungry and cold.

Von der Leyen has history of well let's be polite making a mess of things during her time as a minister in Germany.

How do these people get these jobs? Make a lash up and get rewarded with an even better job, it's unbelievable. The inaction of the government in Spain proves that no matter if governments are left, right or centre none of them give a sh*t about their citizens and the hardships they are facing.

On our weekly shop items seem to have increased between 15 & 30%

Seems many supermarkets frontloaded increases at the first whiff of inflation going up.

Clearly these price increases are embedded now and we won't see reductions.

My wife often looks at what we buy here and compares it to the UK and many of the prices are lower in the UK still. That said we can't pick and choose in our analysis and even with the increases many products which we consume are still cheaper here in Spain - alcohol springs to mind - if you are teetotal this will be of little comfort.

At least we are reminded that the cost of living crisis is alive and well across the world not just the UK.

It depends if you like own brand Spanish foods which I buy - not the Heinz etc. which are over double the price. In the UK I shop often in the Co-op and prices there have gone up dramatically. To be honest I find it a lot cheaper in Spain but as I said it depends on your shopping habits.

I’ve just returned from the UK and done a fair bit of shopping in Lidl UK.I use Lidl in Spain amongst others and would have a wager that the like for like products are cheaper in Spain than the UK.When the price is for instance €2.99 and £2.99 the price might look the same but is actually cheaper in Spain due to exchange rate. The booze is much cheaper in Spain and red peppers in the UK are much dearer and taste free.
