A predominantly British-Spanish community, alongside residents of many other nationalities, has mobilised to demand independence for Orihuela Costa from the municipality of Orihuela.
Headline from Sur in English 26th Aug.
Anyone got any thoughts on this. Appears they are fed up with the coast area being let run down while the inland town is getting everything done for it

We have friends who have been in Spain for over 20 years, they say this has been tried many times in the past from when they first arrived, ultimately it goes nowhere.
Re Ray's comment, I read as meaning a lot of the mess in the area is created by the people who live in the Orihuela Costa region. If that is what he meant I can see his point. I live in the area and the vast majority are fine people who do things correctly, but there are many who don't give a f*** about keeping the pace tidy or following the rules.

Aitch, I haven't had my place over here for two years yet, but it seems every time I come over, it's getting worse.
This is backed up by the more and more complaints about rubbish dumping I'm seeing on the community WhatsApp group.
I fear standards have begun to fall and it all looks very similar to what I remember in the UK about 30 years ago.
And once standards do fall, that fall accelerates more and more rapidly.
I'm not surprised these new party ideas fail though. It'd be exactly the same if someone wanted to introduce an all out Muslim party in the UK. Dead before it started.
Hence it seems to me the way to do it is what's happened in the UK. Start off as getting elected as a member of a Spanish party and build up from there.
Or are the Spanish not so welcoming to foreigners in the political system?
I suspect that they're not as stupid as us British, so have just answered my own question.

Because it failed in the past doesn't mean that well meaning citizens should just give up trying to improve conditions on Orihuela Costa. I find comments on this thread negative, and typical of the apathy shown by most ex pats living here.

The President of that political party is Spanish. There are many non-Spanish members of city/town councils all over Spain.
I don't understand why you brought up a "Muslim" party - that has nothing to do with the independence for Orihuela Costa debate. There are plenty of Muslim voters all over Spain - religion isn't an issue when registering to vote.

Pauline, it's nothing to do with religion in my book, no.
But that's not what I meant.
I meant someone starting a party with a view of taking something away from the majority, which is how it would be perceived by those who live in Oriheula, as opposed to the costa.
Fwiw, I hope they do it and are successful, as I'm all in favour of more localised government.
And thanks for letting me know that foreigners can actually make headway into Spanish politics.
