Hi, I believe you are "correct" in a Spanish way, we purchased 18 years ago and opened a bank account with passports and no NIE, we only got those when we moved here and applied ourselves and got them at an office near the windmill in Torrevieja (not sure the office is there anymore)!

Seem a bit weird though. We couldnt buy a property 17 years ago without an NIE and opening a bank account. We also bought as a holiday home then, butvare now resident.

Many thanks. I’m glad we do not appear to be unique. We have an appointment at the Spanish Consul on Friday afternoon. It can through incredibly quickly. Hopefully my wife’s issue will be resolved !

Just wondering isthe NIE number not on her yearly non resident  tax returns on the Modelo 210. Whoever is doing those for you should have it. Might be worth asking.

Ours is definitely on some document we got with the house. Maybe not the deeds. Possibly the nota simple. It has to be on one of the sale documents.

Dear all. We today went to the Spanish Consulate in London and my wife now is getting an NIE number and the matter  will now be resolved. The whole process at the Consulate was very efficient and quick. Thank you for all your input.

We was originally supplied the A4 sheet with our numbers on, then the residencia card and now our TIE. Just going back to, if an NIE was issued it's yours for life. I thought this was the case, but have just read that a temporary NIE can be issued to European members (obviously UK pre brexit) that lasts 3 months. This is a new one on me and would have thought the people handling the transaction initially would have done the NIE properly. Afterall, that's what most of them did at that time to earn more money.
