Oh the irony of it and the accepted lawlessness of it.  One squatter went on holidays only on her return she found another squatter had taken over the property and ousted her.   Mad.  It's like the old Wild West.

Not just a holiday, but the Dominican Republic! I thought squatters were supposed to be poor people, really struggling?

Absolutely disgusting.

I bought my place less than a year ago, but have been really concerned about squatters.

Fortunately, just yesterday, I collared a Spanish woman just opposite me, who I had noticed, was checking on her neighbour's place. I asked her if she was a keyholder and if so, would she do the same for us.

She said she was just a friend, but would do the same for us, for no payment.

A couple of bottles of decent red plonk and the keys in her hand, it's a great relief just to know someone is keeping an eye on the house now.

Nice one. No contract or monetary payment record...

Enjoy your holiday apartment...

What are you on about, you clown?

Why do I need a contract or payment record? She's a neighbour keeping an eye on the house for me!

It's not purely a holiday apartment! My aim is to retire there in just under 3 and a half years.

And I don't rent it out.

I'd like to, dirt cheap too, because money isn't my god, but daren't because of this squatter risk.

I'd probably spend a lot more time there if it wasn't for Brexit.

Law or no law, if I came home and found squatters in my legally owned property, I'd politely ask them to pick a window, because they would be leaving through one of them.

Unfortunately as they have changed your locks you can't get into your property. I would call a locksmith first but the squatters would probably have the Policia arrive and say you were breaking in!! I am sure we would all love to give them a tow up the proverbial into outer space but the law is on the squatters side which is ludicrous. The property owner is left without their home and bearing the legal costs  to reclaim it.  I know I would love to  put a couple of stink bombs under the door if it happened to me and smoke them out. Any other suggestions on ways to get them out which doesn't land you, the innocent victim, in Court are welcome.

Unless I've got it wrong, I believe you can now get the police to evict them if you can get someone to vouch that it's not their property.

But you only have 48 hours.

It's exactly for this reason that I'm glad to have someone watching it. She's a lovely woman as well, so we're hoping to get to know her a lot better. I'm a massive fan of knowing people around you, which is one of the reasons I want out of the UK.

I honestly don't remember the last time I spoke to a neighbour there, because they never speak, even if you smile at them and say hello.

most insurance policies now have squatter coverage either as standard or as a extra.

When applying, make sure you inform them that an unlicensed stranger holds a set of your house keys..

An extra with Mapfre, I think. Having said that, I should check that.

At a time when I'm trying to reduce my outlay, it's not top of my list, unfortunately.

How is a neighbour a stranger? I'm doing my best to keep it polite with you.

Give it a rest with the little digs. It's tedious.
