Buying and selling is an expensive business here so I would suggest renting for a full year first as you really need to see the area and property in winter and summer as the difference can be huge. If you come inland a bit you will get cheaper rents whilst you look around.

On top of the great advice offered by Cheryl I would also add the following:

Look at the needs of your family, I presume this involves children? What are their ages and school requirements (if any of course) What is your budget? What is important to you? Decipher your Must-Haves from your Nice-To-Haves.

Do you know a specific area, been there many times and 'just know' it's for you? If the answer is NO then I would strongly mirror Cheryl's response... Rent!

Not only is the process expensive, but it could also take you upwards of 2 years to sell a property if you finally work out you have made a mistake.

I should not assume you are coming from the UK, however, if you are then you will very quickly realise that life and needs are completely different in Spain. At the beginning of our journey, all we heard from people was how much 'everyone lives outdoors' and it is so true. I was designing a house with a big indoor space and not considering shade requirements etc... then you become educated the longer you are here. That, of course, is in addition to is the area the right area? Campo, Urbanisation, Coast or Inland.

We wrote a list of what we considered to be our criteria, then we did the Must and Nice separation and then we prioritised it all. Then you need to set your compromise level.

Hope it helps

Hi...not sure if you know the Guardamar town of Costa Blanca but if you are interested we have three apartments which we let all tear round. Guardamar is a lovely old coastal Spanish town, if you visit wee.bradybunch.infi you will see lots of photographs of the apartments and surrounding area. Good luck, we moved to Spain two years ago and haven’t looked back! 😊
