Are there any reports in torrevieja of illegal squatting of holiday homes?  Have heard that there's problems in other areas of spain.

I have a second home in La Siesta.  Squatter broke in about 3 weeks ago.  Everyone I speak to says the problem is widespread and getting worse and the legal system works in their favour.  The Spanish who have second homes are getting builders to brick up the doors and windows in an effort to deter any squatters.   Sadly, the situation is dire.

Hi Bibba:  Can you please explain your comment about Spanish authorities having recently changed the laws and rules regarding this due to the increase, but practice has yet to keep up.   What has changed recently and how recently are you talking?

Many thanks

Karen

Dear Bibba. Many thanks for taking the time to explain this situation.  Sadly, despite the fact that I followed correct procedures and employed a lawyer, the police in Torrevieja were simply not interested in my situation.  The occupation of my house by a squatter was notified to the police within 24 hours, but the police took not action whatsoever.  I am stuck in the UK until travel restrictions are lifted and the squatter is enjoying life in my house, at my expense.

OMG, that's soul destroying to hear. I can't imagine what you are going through. COME ON SPANISH Gov, get a grip & get all squatters out of other people's homes. Don't know who is in charge of these laws but they really need to act now. How would you like it if someone squatted in your homes. I bet you would have them out in a flash😡 GET THE SQUATTERS OUT NOW, NOT LATER WHEN IT'S TOO LATE & DAMAGE IS DONE. I really hope you get them out soon as possible. Wish you best of luck

Heats21:  Thank you.  It is yet another unbelievably unfair situation.  The Spanish authorities are protecting the wrong people, in my opinion.  The squatters won't do anything to improve the economy and neither will I, or thousands like me, if I cannot travel to Spain to enjoy my home.  No flights,  no taxi or hire car, no dinners out in Spanish bars/restaurants, no purchases in the market, etc. etc.   Not being able to visit my own home in Spain will mean I spend my money elsewhere and not in Spain. :(
