Ì was asked for my NIE number when approached by a man who said he was policia.  He flashed an  " I'D "  which Ì now know was fake. Anyway I gave him my NIE number. Later I realised my credit and debit cards were gone. I've cancelled them. Is there any danger in him having my NIE  number. Ì went to the Guardia Civil but they told me to come back  the next day when there would be a translator.  Is there any need for me to be concerned.

Hi Saddlepillar,

I'm sorry to hear of this - and thank you for alerting us to the theft, I haven't heard of this method previously.

When you say the 'policeman' asked for your "NIE", do you mean your green residency card?  While there may be sufficient personal information on your residency card (name, date of birth, address, NIE number) to commit some type of fraud, it wouldn't be possible to do anything that requires photo ID.  I suspect this type of opportunistic theft is more likely used as a ruse to get hold of your bank cards.  However, I would definitely report it to the Guardia as soon as you can.

I understand how frustrating and annoying this must be for you, and hope you're able to successfully report the matter.

Kind regards,

Kim
