Can anyone tell me the pros and cons of storage heaters please?

Also if we decide to go ahead and purchase, where would the best place be to buy them?

Gracias.

I have storage heaters.  Charge up overnight when the electric is cheaper and keep my property warm 24 hours per day.  The units are very low consumption, the largest unit is only 1.3kW

Pros

Easy to install, they can be sited pretty much anywhere as long as there is electrical power available. This has helped us to eliminate cold spots and have a more even temperature throughout the property.

Convenient to control and regulate.

They aren’t overly expensive to purchase and install and there is a varying range of sizes available for different locations.

Cons

For all mains electrically powered products, electricity is quite expensive in Spain and the night/day tariff (14hrs night/10hrs day) will gradually disappear as existing contracts get renewed (I believe, but stand to be corrected). This will impact when arranging timescales for charging the heaters. Unfortunately, in the winter this can impact your electricity bills, although thankfully this is only for a few months.

Depending on the electricity capacity of your property it may (only may) limit the use of other electrical appliances when the heaters are charging or under manual control.

Misc

Whilst they aren’t exactly small, they are very neat.

Would concur with ‘tpandmush’ – I would recommend Sparks Electrical Services – even if it just for advice.

Hope this at least gives you something to work with.

Regards,

Bob

Iberdrola Clientes are not phasing out the Plan Noche scheme, but even if you do change to the new three tier tariff you still get cheaper electric overnight.

Hi Robbie,

We have Gabarron storage heaters and we´re delighted with the consistent temperature all around the house:

https://www.elnur-global.com/

Personally, I don´t think they´re expensive to run - we have Plan Noche with Iberdrola, so the units are timed to charge between 1am and 8am at the off-peak rate.  I suppose the only slight negative is when we get an unusually warm day, but you can turn down the output.

Kind regards,

Kim

They are quick and easy to install - not a messy job.

But check your supply potencia (the kw capacity you are contracted to receive from your electricity supplier).

Some supplies are as low as 3.4kw. This might just run 3 small heaters concurrently. Your fridge, lights, etc. would have just 400 watts left to share. You could not run a washing machine, dishwasher, pool pump, electric water heater, electric cooking or toaster at the same time.

The larger storage heaters use a lot more power.

You can increase your potencia, but this will increase your standing charge. Your electricity supplier will ask for an electrical test certificate (confirming the capability of your wiring/distribution board to support the increase); that test might lead to the need for additional work.

There is now the option to combine storage heaters with photo-voltaic cells (solar panels), although I have no direct experience of this.
