Should I book in advance a trip out to Tabarca in July?

Yes, it gets very busy in those months.

I am genuinely confused. Why take a crowded boat trip from the mainland with all it's lovely beaches and restaurants and go to a tiny island that looks just like where you've come from, only more crowded and expensive?

What am I missing here please?

I have just read the first page of 1 star reviews on Tripadvisor and can't think of anything worse.

Anything else or is this the main draw because the beaches don't look very nice? Do they have glass bottomed boat round trips from Santa Pola, I'd go on one of those but that's as close as I personally would want to get.

Been coming to Santa Pola for 20 years we did our first trip to Tabarca about two weeks ago, Took the first ferry out,  for the first half an hour, hour It was great snorkelling hardly anybody there. Then the crowds descended not an enjoyable experience. It’s quaint, Overpriced compared to the mainland, but you would expect that. Will return just for the snorkelling that was amazing, but it will be the first ferry out

I'm asking for my son and family who are looking for something else to do. It's probably the boat trip, visiting an island, and the snorkeling that are most interesting.

I have (on & off over 25yrs) been visiting the island. Via a glass-bottomed boat, with the speed-boat & luckily with a friend's boat. Also stayed in one of the two hotels. ( & the tourists go back to the mainland & leave the island quiet). It's not a beach trip, there's plenty of tourists enjoying those on overcrowded beaches along the coast. There's plenty of seafood restaurants on the island, all in competition, & so I didn't find it too expensive. & Yes the snorkeling amongst the crystal clear rocks is excellent. PS: I've never booked apart from the hotel. V
