I'm a British citizen and have been resident in Spain for some years. I have private healthcare here, as I am under the UK State Pension age. I have a private pension that can only be taxed in the UK.

I have to travel back to London for a few days. Do I need specific travel insurance for this trip? OR is there a card available in Spain like I used to have in the UK for trips to Europe?

TIA for any answers.

You can apply for the equivalent Spanish EHIC card, Google will help.

Isn't that only for those working in Spain and paying into the social security system?

I have checked Google, which dtates I can apply for the free card as,a resident in Spain but a UK citizen. The card that gives me cover in EU, as weIl as UK, Norway, Switzerland, Sweden et al.

I have spent a couple of fruitless hours trying to apply, using my NIE, TIE and cl@ve, but I just get my application rejected everytime, no matter what I do.

I will have to check my private health insurance to see if that covers me in the UK.

Not according to Google, and the Citizens Advice Bureau and the Spanish health service

Google searches on several sites come up with "Resident in Spain, working in Spain and contributing to Social Security".

CAB says "Residents working in Spain can obtain the TSE or equivalent of EHIC"

Spanish health service has "If you are resident in Spain, have a Spanish social security number and you are actively paying your contributions into the Spanish Social Security system, you should apply for the Spanish equivalent of the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) which is the Tarjeta Sanitario Europea (TSE)."

UK pensioners in Spain only get the EHIC issued by UK and cannot get the Spanish equivalent.

But insurance cover only  if you book your flights, accomodation and car hire through them. I booked this on another bank card.

I just took out Travel Insurance for my short trip at a minimal cost. I don't envisage returning to UK in the foreseeable future, and wont't travel outside of Spain until at least April, so no point in getting my usual annual policy until then.

Sorry, I misunderstood this, as the flow chart I followed is obviously wrong or outdated. Thank you for pointing this out.

Only a few months before I get my State Pension and S1.

Welcome to the oldies club. A few more years and you can get your driving license for free, except the medical test fee of course.
