Hi  Forum  members

At  present  I  live in Ireland,  and  have a few medical issues,   I  receive   Medication   for, The  Medication  is   Capped  in price at 80 euros  a month,

I  have purchased  the  Medication  in  Punta Prima   on  a few  occasions,  but find  My  Medication  is  expensive  compared  to  Ireland

My query  is  if  and  when I  move to  Spain  🇪🇸   do  I  have to Pay  full  cost of  Medication  or is there any  way  I  can  get  a refund  or  Cheaper  method  of Purchasing  Medication,   I  will  become  a Full  time  legal  Resident

Any  help 🙏  would be appreciated

It’s all depends on your healthcare.

If you have private healthcare then you pay the full cost of your medication. Same rule applies for Spanish healthcare under pension age.  But you could find that the Spanish equivalent medication is much cheaper to what you have to pay in Ireland.

If you are at the age where you are claiming state pension, you can register your S1 form (Irish Equivalent?)  with your local INSS  and allocated a GP at your nearest salud.   You then pay 10%  of the cost of your medication. Then depending on your annual tax return, this could go down to zero.

The farmacia may be able to find you something cheaper.

For instance if you ask for headache tablets, they will always try and sell you the most expensive product they have. So without a bit of prior knowledge you could end up paying 10€ for branded tablets, whereas the generic economy ones will cost you less than 1€.

Composition of the tablets is the same, you’re just paying for a brand name.
It could also  be worth having a word with the doctor who’ll prescribe your meds here in Spain..

OK. Lynn has explained the situation perfectly, so nothing more to say.
