Notes from uk doctor

Most medicines are "over the counter" here. 

If you go to the pharmacy with your existing (UK) tablets etc. with the prescription label on (with your name etc.), the pharmacist will look up the prescription and sell you/order for you the Spanish equivalent.

This has worked well for my wife, but she uses commonly prescribed drugs. If you need something unusual/risky etc., the process might be different.

We have private health insurance in Spain, but didn't bother the doctor until something new came up. When we eventually went to the doctor, she asked us what meds were were on and why. She also asked the usual questions ... what issues do you have/what surgery have you had etc. that was it.

so you dont think i need to pay to get records of my doctor,can you go to local dr. before you become resident we have bought  a house but people are saying you can not get appointments to become resident ty x

Until you have Residencia you can use your EHIC Card to get treatment at any Medical Centre.

Our health insurance covers GP appointments. The GP (or consultant) writes prescriptions. If the prescriptions are provided by our hospital after day-patient treatment, the costs are covered by our insurer. If we get the prescription fulfilled by our pharmacist, we pay. 

This just seems to be a function of the specific insurance policy.

PHI does not include pre-exsisting conditions or the cost of prescriptions.

Technically when you leave UK intending to take up residence in another country your EHIC is immediately void for use in that country, you do not need to attain residency first.

In practice until you do formally assume residency, or join the health system, then you are in limbo and UK have little reason to query the use of an EHIC.

Applying for an S1 is a show stopper of course! 

And we paid for our UK records, with which we went armed to visit the local doctor, together with details of relevant drugs (husband long term condition). Doctor not remotely interested in records, simply prescribes Spanish equivalents of drugs on prescription list.
