Hi Tracey,

Are you a UK citizen in receipt of the State Retirement Pension?  If so, you should qualify for a Form S1, which enables you to transfer your free healthcare entitlement from the UK to Spain.  To check whether you're eligible, contact the Overseas Healthcare Team in Newcastle on +44 191 218 1999 or email them at [email protected].

Kind regards,

Kim

If there's a no-deal Brexit, which is still possible, then an S1 could immediately become invalid.

If there is a deal, GOV.UK will only commit themselves to saying that S1 cover is valid until the end of this year.

Please be aware that free health care is only guaranteed until end of 2020.

This could result in hardship for retired people at or above UK pension age having to pay 2000 Euros per person per year into the convenio especiar to receive healthcare that they have not budgeted for.  So ensure you have the financial means to budget for this.

Hi Tracey,

I was hoping you were going to say that you're Irish, as that would mean the Brexit fiasco wouldn't impact you.

I would urge you to take on board VivienneAnn's comments about potential healthcare costs should we end up with a no-deal Brexit.  In this case, UK State pensions will cease to be updated after 2022 as well.

Kind regards,

Kim

Kimmy,

I had missed the fact that  "UK State pensions will cease to be updated after 2022 as well" .

This is another risk that appears to be not openly discussed or even being planned for.

Hi its the withdrawal ag being agreed by HOL now after it gets royal assent and then to be ratified by the EU which contains our rights and eu citizens' rights so even if there is no deal the WAg stands and we have rights for life

Not necessarily - the Spanish government has said that the UK citizens' rights offered by Spain must be reciprocated on a "like-for-like" basis for Spaniards living in the UK, but the UK government has yet to do this.

Kind regards,

Kim
