Hello good people.

I went down to apply for my SIP card at the local Salud. The documents I took were my residency card, passport and NIE. The lady at the desk informed me I didn't have my Padron. I picked it up from my solicitor, so that is now sorted. What threw me was when she asked me for my social security number. Friends who have obtained their SIP cards say they were never asked for it. Others say that you only need a social security number if you intend to find employment. As I am 70 that's not going to happen.

Any advice would be very welcome. Thank you.

Nothing to do with employment. If you don't have a social security number, you won't get a sip.

Assuming you are a full resident of Spain you should have had  a s1 health care form which all UK pensioners are entitled to. It Transfers your healthcare over from the uk and is paid for by the UK government. All the S1 paperwork should be taken to the local INSS offices for approval. They will give you a social security number along with more paperwork to gain your SIP.

Hello. Thank you for your help.

I have my S1 and my residency card. I am an Irish citizen. Does this make a difference? As I wrote earlier, my friends were not asked for their social security number when applying for their SIP.

Maybe the paperwork they handed in had their social security numbers on them....?

Your health centre CANNOT issue you with a SIP without one. You need to submit your S1 to your local INSS office, who will process it and issue you with the paperwork you need to take to the health centre.

Maybe they are asking for your National Insurance Number.

We had to give them ours.

Whatever you call it, the number is issued by INSS and you can't get a SIP without it

Hi, thanks for your reply.

I have left it with my solicitor. She's going to organise the social security number and my SIP.

You mentioned you have a solicitor? They can register the S1 online for you or you can do this yourself by following the step by step procedures in the following link. Although written for UK nationals the procedure is the same for everyone registering a S1.

Glad you are getting it sorted but if you use a gestor, they will do things at a fraction of the cost of a solicitor.
I use Uma at getlegalinspain.com.
