What  advice  would  I  get  from this  forum  if  I  move to  Spain, take out  private  medical insurance  as  is required  by  Spainish  law, These  Policies   do  not   cover   Medical   conditions   that  exist  prior   to  taking  out  Medical  insurance  in  Spain,  If  I  did  need  medical treatment   in  Hospital   for  existing  problem   God  for  bid,  where  would  I  stand.

We have been advised that our policy still covers emergency treatment/ hospitalisation up-to diagnosis - this would apply until such time as a problem could be linked to a pre existing condition or something new. Clearly you'd need to ask this specific question which should be in each insurers booklet/ t&c's.

If you had a non emergency re-occurrence then you'd likely have to self fund.

After a year of legal residence you could join the state healthcare convenio especial which for a fee would cover pre-existing conditions.

Or you may have an exportable health benefit from your country of origin.

Hi there,

All medical policies in Spain have the same exclusion: Pre-existing conditions are NOT covered, unless they are declared and expressively accepted by the Insurer. So it is very important that during the health questionnaire process you do declare any pre-existing conditions according to what they ask you. This is the only way that if you'd require assistance in the future, you are covered.

You should also check the insurer's network (hospitals and doctors you can use in your area), also check if the policy has co-payments (excess-deductible) as for residency you need it without co-payments.

Hope this helps,

Darryl.
