Best option is an insurance broker (corredor de seguros) who will finde what suits you best. In any case carefully read and try to understand the small print.

Personally would not recommend.

It turned out they had insured the wrong property! Despite having the correct details.

Luckily we didn't need to claim.

Never got an answer as to how the error was made.

Yeah i hear that they are not the best, but hope to hear from someone who has or had them and made a claim at some point.

I used them in my first year in Spain because, although expensive, it earned me a 50% reduction in the cost of my bankers draft for the house purchase, worth about 200€.

Fortunately I didn't need to make any claims, and I dropped them in year two in favour of insurance arranged by Alfonso in Gran Alicant Insurance.

Yes, Alfonso is brilliant. Sabadell tried to get me to take their insurance to reduce costs elsewhere but he found better cover with Liberty Seguros (better, not necessarily cheaper).

I've been with them for the last three years, mainly because our account is with them and I thought that might be worth something,  but who knows?  I'm thinking of cancelling the renewal which is due in February.

I'm wondering, being relatively new to home ownership in Spain, is it actually a legal requirement that you at least insure the building here?  I believe it is in the UK, especially with a mortgage, but what about here?  I know there is some risk in being uninsured but I just wondered if I really HAVE to have it?

I must say I don't know if you are required to have one, all I can say is that the first 2 years I didn't have, and my lawyer back then never told me I had to have, but mine is an apartment and not a house, so there is probably some sort of insurance on the building itself. With all the horror stories I read now with people having their claims turned down I cant really see why pay a lot of money if they don't do what they are supposed to anyway.
