My husband and I had travelled to Alicante last year to start looking at places in the south of Spain to buy a property. My husband passed away this year and I am not sure what to do. I am in my 40s with teenagers so I have plenty of time to decide, however I would potentially like to use our future holidays to start to rent places in areas where I might potentially buy. I still love the idea of getting somewhere eventually.

My wish list has changed now since his passing. Ultimately the area needs to be really safe and I would prefer a close community around me to make friends and socialise. I never really wanted to have to drive in Spain so under an hour transport from the airport and near enough to get a bus or walk to a beach/shop/cafe/bar/restaurant.

If anyone has any suggestions that would be most appreciated.

Hello Ann

I would suggest you come & look at some towns along the coast, south of  Alicante City  & the airport......Guardamar, La Mata & also Torrevieja.   These towns tick all your boxes & Ive lived here almost 20 yrs in La Mata.  They are not solely English , which is lovely. & many nationalities are resident or have holiday homes along the coast.

Start checking out these locations - get that right & then look at properties in the area.

Remember...Regret will haunt you more than failure.

I wish you Good Luck

Cheers

Elinspain

Hi

We have a place just south of Torrevieja..

Punta prima.. Its lovely,  walkable to the beach , loads of bars and restaurants and feel very safe..

Go for a gated Community and you can't go wrong.  X

If you don't want to drive then look at torrevieja (la mata and area between la mata and torrevieja and between n332 Road and coast see map attached, anywhere within 2km radius of red flag). Good frequent bus routes, (bus route map attached), close to beach, many nationalities and safe area. On inland side of n332 areas like torettas 1,2,3, el chapperal, San Luis and la siesta all have bus coverage but are a little more dated.   If you look further afield to quesada, Los balcones, villa Martin, la zenia, playa flamenco, cabo roig or on golf resorts then a car is almost a necessity as public transport is lacking

In addition  to the last post, from alicante airport to torrevieja  and vice versa costs euro7 each way, takes 50 mins and runs from 7am to 9pm. This takes you to bus station and a local bus stop outside links you all local routes

/Torre de la Horadada is a lovely little place that hardly anyone has heard of. It’s got everything you need and within ten minutes everything you want. It’s very safe, a good mix of  Spanish and foreigners, it’s open all year, I bought a holiday home here but due to ‘circumstances beyond my control’ I decided to stay and get residency. I can’t really describe how nice it is here - you’ve got to see it for yourself. If you decide to come over and have a look let me know and I’ll show you around.
