I'm always a fan of do it yourself in these situations.

We left the UK last year and our council tax was £180 p/m.  The level of public services for this was pretty poor, especially with regards to bin uplifts and keeping public spaces and walkways clean and well kept.

In Spain we pay about €150 per year for the services and the bin uplifts in particular are excellent.

However, I accept that other services aren't so good and certainly the amount of weeds growing on pavements and roadsides is an issue. Nonetheless, I look after the areas outside my own place and my neighbours and it takes a few minutes a couple of times a week. No biggie.

I reckon if folk were back in the UK they would tidy up the areas a bit more themselves. So why no do it here?

I don’t live in Spain, but do have a house in orihuela costa, I find it laughable that people are blaming brexit on all of there woe’s, I know a ot of people who have lived in Spain under the radar, but now have to leave, because of new rules, this is the chance you took years ago, you lived the life but returned to England to collect your medications etc, as fir the rubbish on the roads our small urbanisation employs a man to do the cleaning etc. doesn’t cost much but well worth it .get together with your neighbours or at your yearly meeting with the administrator  and suggest it comes out of community fees.

I’m happy to blame brexit for the problems it has so obviously caused.NLVs,Spanish driving tests extra expense for people retiring to Spain, and division across generations particularly within families.Just a few things related to wanting to live in Spain. How many time on this forum do you read ...

...that someone wants to come and live and work in Spain only to be very disappointed when the reality is pointed out?

To be fair, we've had around 2 years to get our licenses sorted out. What's the problem ?

Like a lot off you I would happily join a cleaning gang , a few hours a week not a problem  , but you also need the council to pick up what we've collected,  good way off meeting new people,  it's not Brexit fault , it's the politicians in england and spain , driving licences should have been sorted by now , nlv's are doable but they should also take into account people like me who brought a villa before Brexit and a Spanish car and all the Spanish taxes I have paid and paying .

Probably as much as your whining about me!Thought you’d blocked me anyway.Still remains fact though, brexit has only caused a lot of unexpected problems for many.We all know people that are now embarrassed by their vote in 2016.My poor old mum goes into Morrison’s in the UK and is confronted by empty shelves and was quite surprised when I mentioned her vote in 2016 has helped bring that about. She thought that Faridge (sic) was a very nice man.Not so much now.

My area in the UK has weedy gutters and kerbs unless cleared by residents, the only decent verges are the ones where the residents look after them, the road surfaces are often left in a poor state and although we have public rubbish bins and dog poo bins they are left to overflow before being emptied. Broken glass bottles are frequently cleared up early morning from a dog walking field where teenagers hang at night by dog owners.  I live in an area where pride is taken in surroundings, there is local group of ladies who plant bulbs in verges around the bottom of lamp posts and street signs (often broken), put up small Christmas decs on lamp posts, railings and just about anything else that is static (and remove them afterwards), regularly sweep the main pavements and clear street rubbish. We pay nearly £200 a month in council tax for the 'privilege' of being left to do this ourselves. Maybe Spain needs to increase IBI (Suma) a little. But on Orihuela Costa the Town Hall just needs to spend the funds it already has more fairly, instead of using OC as a cash cow for projects in Orihuela City.
