TORREVIEJA council has had to pay €163,000 to dispose of 9,083 mattresses dumped on the city’s streets in just three months.  Councillor Carmen Gomez Candel revealed that the cleaning department workers have been overwhelmed by the dumping of household furniture in recent months. What are the procedures for betting rid of damaged/unwanted furniture?.......perhaps if this was clearer then people would stop dumping items?

 - an article in the Free newspapers may help educate people?

I reckon over the summer months in our area of San Luis I see about 40 mattresses dumped around the place. People are just lazy and as long as it's not outside of their own front door they are happy to dump it in front of someone else's.

The only way this will change is by communities agreeing that action needs to be taken and by either challenging the fly tippers or by taking a picture of their car registration and informing the Police ad Town Hall.

This article appeared in Información last Thursday, but they also said that only ~800 people rang the town hall and asked when their mattress could be collected. That means that less than 10% of disposals were done correctly. If I remember correctly, the Información article said that some of the dumping had been done illegally by retailers.

It has never ceased to amaze me how many mattresses get dumped in Spain.  Do the Spanish change mattresses every few months? In the UK I have had mine for years and it's still perfect.

I wonder if part of the problem (other than people not taking the effort to do things properly) is that so many properties are sold furnished. When I buy, I would prefer not to have all the furnishings but it seems that the sellers don't want to deal with the furnishing so leave them. I would think especially matrices would be unwanted by the new inhabitants of the property.

But as previously said, that's not a reason to just dump the unwanted at the curb!
