Hello

My dog ,Dylan is arriving in two weeks and I have some concerns re caterpillars which I believe are poisonous to dogs We live in La Siesta and I plan to walk Dylan in  Parque natural  La Mata . There are lots of pine trees in this area and this is where I believe the caterpillars come from . Any advice would be most welcome

Copied from an earlier post.

On a different post a helpful member, Cheryl, provided a link to a webpage on the subject of Processionary Caterpillars. As a dog owner I believe that this is worth sharing in a dedicated post as we are approaching the time when the caterpillars pose a very serious danger to our much loved pets.

From last years experience it is just a matter of keeping your dog on the lead and being vigilant when walking, so nothing new there.

Further to the link about it, if you have Facebook then Boycan Centro Veterinario posted about it with photos of a dog they are treating. (In Spanish).

https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=840249652753784&id=276806969098058

Further info re treatment:

- Abundant washing of the mouth with VERY HOT pressure water !. The heat inactivates the toxin that produces necrosis in the tongue.

- do not rub! Rubbing the tongue and mouth when washing it only worsens the situation because it will distribute more stinging hairs.

- go to the vet urgently.

Hi.

We are moving to La Torreta next month and bringing our dog an do three cats.

You mention walking at the salt lakes which are very close to us.

Are the caterpillars less abundant here.

There will be fewer caterpillars at the Salt Lakes, they tend to be found where there are pine trees as they in an earlier stage in their life cycle nest in the trees.
