I am looking for a place that makes / sells Authentic Kebabs or Shawermas. Real Lamb not the gunge they usually pass off as lamb in Europe....

I will accept Chicken too if it is good. I used to eat Shawerma rolls from a place in Dokki square in Cairo where the stars of the theatres used to come to eat late in the evening. Also Naima near Sherihans shop along sharia el Nil street was very good. Turkish Kebabs in Istanbul were also quite good. The last good one I had was near the bus station in Torremolinos. The place near the Harbour in Torrevieja sells what are immediate bin jobs, just like most of the Kebab places in the UK where as soon as I see that stuff that looks like dark pumice stone on the stack then Bye Bye.

I guess it's like trying to find a pizza place in Amsterdam that isn't run by N. Africans.

Anyway I'm open to suggestions etc....................

Enjoy local foods in authentic environment. Then you get the proper experience and don't offend native people, if their food is not like the one, which "my mother cooks". I never looked for a good paella abroad. It needs the little secret ingredient, which only the local chef knows...

You are right but I have had some good ones in Spain, Fuengirola and Torremolinos made by Egyptians and Turks respectively.  I do not like Paella to my wife's chagrin because normally it is for 2 people, She is Italian so we have quite varied meals at home. She is preparing Strawberry Tiramisu at the moment. We eat at all sorts of restaurants here several times a month, but It is just that I haven't had a "Good" Kebab in years. Just wondered if anyone knew of a good place. No offence to anyone, unfortunately many so called ethnic restaurants after several generations in another country take up the local styles and tastes of that country while calling themselves Chinese or Italian restaurants eg.

I was just after a tastyTake away actually. Btw. My wife doesn't like Kebabs, they have had bad press in Italy.

Cheers

A selection of kebab shops all in this area, for you to try. I have not had the pleasure of a "real kebab in the middle east", but have enjoyed Varto on occasions

Hi M

I share your frustration, although I don't have such comprehensive knowledge as you!

When I lived in Molesey (surrey) the local chippy also did genuine lamb kebabs to perfection - they wouldn't dream of selling them undercooked and fatty and drenched in mayonnaise! And lovely fresh salad and pickled chilli's! Can't remember if they were Greek or Turkish. I used to order and then go for a pint across the road until they were ready!

When's the next flight to Gatwick?šŸ¤£

Cheers

Steve

Hi Tony,

I think It was Varto, I tried the chicken, But was a bit disappointed. I saw the Lamb pile but could see it was what has become the Euro standard.

Have been meaning to pop into th one near Aldi on the Av cortes Valenciennes one evening.

I always look at the stack, if it is small they don't do much business so better to stay clear. When I saw Varto I was encouraged but after trying I think they bow to spanish tastes and have lost their roots.

"That's the way to do it" HaHa, Next flight to Istanbul ! Oh for a biiger pension !

Here it is pretty good. out in the sticks there are loads of Spanish places, Take a drive at about 2 pm on a Sunday, Note which ones have loads of cars outside, pop in have digs and get a business card and maybe a menu.  Call them up to make a reservation for when you want to go. Usually no Menu del dia on Sundays.

International choice is very good locally too,

Happy eating

Appreciate everything you say M, but my missus has Type 1 diabetes, which compromises her food choices, and by extension, mine as well!

But sometimes soon we will try Rancho Blanco, near San Miguel, if only because we know one of the staff there, who used to work Murphys in La Zenia and used to get the odd free pint from him, when the buyer forgot that they ordered it!

Cheers

Here you go.  I was in Istanbul a couple of months ago and this place near where I stayed in the Besiktas area always had a queue outside.

It was never open in the evening as by then the whole thing had been sold.

Tell you one thing, it's difficult being a Pescatarian as it seemed every other shop in Istanbul was a Kebab outlet šŸ„“
