If you are a UK passport holder..............

To gain residency in Spain you will need to apply for a visa from the Spanish consulate while you are still living in the UK. You need to apply yourself and not through a third party. There is a Spanish consulate in London, Manchester or Edinburgh. 

If you are applying for a non lucrative visa you will not be allowed to work otherwise it will void your visa. If you want residency and need to work you will need to get your prospective employer to sponsor your work visa. 

For a non lucrative visa you will need to meet the income and healthcare requirements. The income requirements for the first person is around €28,000 per annum and around €34,000 for a couple. The income will need to be proved on 2nd and 4th year before gaining permanent residency at year five.

For the first year you will need full private healthcare paid for a full year. After that you can renew the private healthcare or join the Convenio especial and get full national Spanish Healthcare. If you are retired you can apply for healthcare through the S1 healthcare scheme which is paid for by the UK government.

For the avoidance of doubt you should understand that acquiring residency is in no way a workaround for the 90/180 day rule.

If you become Spanish resident then you will not be allowed to leave the country for more than 6 months in any one year or for more than a total of 12 months during the first 5 years.

It's a long term commitment and unless you're prepared (and financially able) to make that leap then there really is little point in delving any deeper.

Many thanks for your responses.....it would appear that despite having invested in a Spanish bolthole they really don't want you to live there long term or be able to reciprocate health care, etc

Disappointed UK Pensioner

If you applied for residency and as a UK pensioner you would be entitled to full healthcare through the S1 healthcare scheme (after your first year) which is paid for by the UK government.

The 90 day restrictions have always been there for non EU citizens, it was Brexit that made the restrictions apply to UK citizens. Spain didn't introduce them as they are an EU ruling.

The comment about investing in a Spanish "bolt hole" suggests that you're not yet ready to become a Spanish resident. I would just enjoy your 180 days in the Spanish sun and adhere to the current rules.

We are going through the process at the moment. Most agency’s want about £900 each to send you the paper work and check it . You still need to pay for the Apostille and translating of some of the documents . The hardest form to get is the cert for good health from your doctor . Absolutely madness

I'm nearly complete in buying my home in Torrevieja.  Try to see things as living the best of both world. Have 6 months in England and 6 months in Spain. Make sure you gave at least 1 day more in England.

I'm planning on living that way and see it as a good thing. Not a bad thing.

Just had our appointment emails back with password. Wife went into hers and booked it I went into and guess what no appointments available . Is that appointment for both of us ?
