Hi all, I've looked around and cant see a posting for my query. Myself and wife are looking to retire early and move to Torrevieja in  March '22 both aged 41.

We aren't planning on working to earn a wage (only working as/when we choose to). We are aware healthcare is required but wondered if we have a good lump of cash in the bank such as €200k would this suffice that we would not be a burden on the spanish government and be approved for residency?

I know nothing is definate but would really appreciate some opinions from this well informed group.

For a married couple the income requirements to apply for residency are around €32,000 per annum.

The first applicant needs to show €25,816.32 a year plus €6,454,08 for each additional family member.

I'm not sure of the lump sum figure but someone will enlighten us.

You will need full private healthcare cover paid for a full year. After you have live in Spain legally for a full year you can apply for the Convenio especial which gives you access to the Spanish healthcare service. It will cost you €60 per month for under 65's and around €160 per month for over 65's.

You need to start the process of Spanish residency whilst still in the UK and will probably need a visa to visit Spain.

It will be a good idea to contact a Spanish Gestor or solicitors close to your desired area and ask advice.

Hi Chris,

Now that the UK has left the EU, your application for residency in Spain has to be started in the UK at the Spanish Embassy.  The usual route for pensioners and early retirees is the Non-Lucrative visa, although this means you would not be able to work - these links should be helpful, although the Spanish consulate is currently temporarily closed:

http://www.exteriores.gob.es/Consulados/LONDRES/en/Consulado/Pages/Visas.aspx

http://www.exteriores.gob.es/Consulados/LONDRES/en/Consulado/Pages/BookAppointment.aspx

The financial requirements for Third Country Nationals have increased for 2021 in line with the increase in Spain's IPREM (Public Income Indicator).  The figure required is a little less than €28k for an individual and around €34,800 for a married couple.

A Non-lucrative visa lasts for 3 months, during which you apply for a Non-Lucrative Residence Permit, which lasts for 1 year.  You can then apply to renew the permit in 2 yearly intervals, until you achieve 5 years' permanent residence in Spain.  You'll need to prove the financial requirements for the first year's permit, plus each of the subsequent 2 year permits.

Kind regards,

Kim

If you want to retire to live in Spain permanently you first need to apply to the Spanish embassy while you are still living in the UK. You will need to be able to meet the income and healthcare requirements. For a couple you need about €32,000 per annum plus full healthcare cover paid for a full year.

I thought if you were of retiring age you didn’t need private healthcare as you could have S1 signed from NHS uk?

You need private healthcare cover to further your application. S1 are only available now if you are a legal resident of Spain.

Hi Steve and Jan,

Were you living permanently in Spain before 31 December 2021 and applying for a TIE under the terms of the Withdrawal Agreement?  Or have you/are you moving permanently to Spain this year?  Your circumstances will dictate the correct response.

Kind regards,

Kim
