Hi

Someone posted on here that unless you are a resident, you should not register on the padron. I've been told today by an official who deal with helping tourists move to Spain, that this is wrong, and as a home owner I SHOULD register on the padron irrelevant of whether I am resident or not and that this helps the council obtain more funding due to them receiving more funding for each person on the padron. I queried regarding not being resident, and they confirmed again, that this has nothing to do with registering on the padron. I will pay a visit and see what I'm told face to face, but has anyone had any experience of registering on the padron whilst not being resident? Thanks in advance

You have been told wrong..

Fully legal residents only should sign on the Padron so the local council can ask for funding to suit the permanent residents.

If you sign on the Padron even as a non resident the council can then ask for more funding.

Stick to the letter of the residency rules as you don't gain anything.

In fact you might lose.

By signing the Padron you are stating that you are a full time resident at the address.  You should research, for your own information, just what this would mean for you regarding your driving licence, if you drive in Spain, your tax obligations and your health care amongst other things.

After you have done this, think again.

Define 'official'?

Whomever it is though they are plain wrong, no if's, but's, or maybe's about it.

Hello

You need to show your residency card (TIE) or original  registration paper ( + other documents), to allow you  to register - without it you won't be accepted for padron registration in Torrevieja

Cheers

I have had a holiday home in the area for 20 years and never signed on the Padron, if you do there is a complete contradiction, on the one hand you are non res, then sign on the Padron which then says that you are a resident.

I wouldn't waste your time speaking to council type officials face to face as it is possible that you would get the same wrong advice, it is in their interests to have you sign on the Padron but it is most definitely against your own interests.

I would forget all about it and enjoy your holiday home.

Ken.

Thanks everyone.

I see! Hmmmm this has now made me question everything else she said regarding tax etc. She is a relocation specialist, but also Spanish herself, living in Spain so this is a bit confusing.

She was advising regarding moving to Spain full time on an EU passport. Looks like I can't afford to move to Spain now because I'd be financially worse off due to how they tax people. It worked out roughly €300 down per month compared to the UK, which is a lot for me.

Personally I can't understand the problems with personal taxes here in Spain. My retirement income is very similar to what I used to earn annually in the UK when working. I pay far less taxes here in Spain now after 8 years into retirement.

Ask a different taxation specialist before coming to a final decision.

She has advised you correctly. If you wish to become resident so should sign on the padron and you would pay Spanish taxes if you are resident (staying over 183 days or centre of your economic activities in Spain)

If you don't wish to become resident then, even as an EU passport holder, you can only legally stay for 90 days.

Hi Peter,

She was saying I should sign the padron even without becoming resident, if I don't decide to become resident.
