Hello good people.

I am an EU citizen resident in Torrevieja. I am in the process of exchanging my driving licence for a Spanish licence, for which I need to renew my Padron.

Can anybody point me in the right direction as to how I go about this please? Do I go to Torrevieja Town Hall? Is there a specific department? Do I need an appointment? I know I need my passport, NIE/Residency Permit, and proof of address.

Any information and help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Ian

I'm not in that area, but if you're near to the town hall you could look at the cyber kiosk in the entry and see what that could do for you.

But if you've got an electronic certificate or Cl@ve, you can get one online in a matter of minutes:

And if you haven't got electronic ID, it would be much quicker to get that and do the online application that it would be to do an in person application.

In April/May this year l went to the Torrevieja padron office to renew my padron, the office was not renewing padrons and a official informed me l had to go to the Municipal Office/police station next door to the Age concern shop in Calle Paganini La Siesta, opening hours 8.30am to 1.30pm Monday to Friday, no appointment necessary. Make sure you take the old padron, T.I.E, passport and a utility bill. I renewed mine and I was in/out in 5 minutes. Good luck.

Hello, thank you for your advice. I was set up, by my solicitors, with a digital signature. Unfortunately, I have no idea exactly what it is, or how to access it, or how to use it. Do I need a password to access it? I was probably given one .. but as I have never used it I have no idea what it is.

Once again, thank you.

...

Electronic certificates have a three year life before they need to be renewed online. If yours is less than three years old, or your lawyer has renewed it, then ask him to email it to you along with its password. This has happened to several of my friends, to whom I suggested they say they want the certificate to use the MiDGT app etc, so it seems to the lawyer that they were not wanting the certificate to do things the lawyer would expect to do. I'd point out that it's your certificate, so you're entitled to it.

Once you've got the certificate, just click on it to install it on whatever device you're using. Just follow the prompts, and where choices are offered then just accept the defaults.

You don't need to know how to use it, as it will pop up when it's needed.

The quickest way is to go to the Police Station/Office on Calle Paganini as the very helpful post from  Peter 3473 suggested. Just make sure you have all the paperwork. The office is open 8.30am to 1.30pm

For your driving licence what they probably want is just a more recent copy of your padron certificate rather than proof of renewal. This is a very common requirement. You can get a copy easily from your local town hall.

We always pick up our padron from the town hall in Guardamar del segura they are so helpful you need to register with the town hall first then you can have a padron  they last 3 months you just go and get a new one when they have run out it’s easy

The OP is in Torrevieja who operate differently to Guardamar.   You can't get a Padrón from Guardamar if you live in Torrevieja.

Get your secure key from the Suma office, take your NIE and passport. Validate it using the given procedure. (works with Linux too) Use this to get your Padron certificate online from Ayuntamiento. Get onto the DGT site and  use your secure key on your computer to register. you can then go through the procedure to convert your license. (canje) and you will get an online acceptance code, take the code with you when you go to DGT, see below.

Fill in the forms and print them out.

I presume you have already done the Psycho/Technical test and have the doc.

You need to go to the DGT, Presence is necessary.  The Elche DGT office is fine with virtually no waiting and easy parking outside the office. If you are over 65 you don't need an appointment and the whole thing is free.

We did it 3 weeks ago for my wife at the Elche DGT, They said it was better to come and get the new license as Torrevieja post does not arrive. It takes 6 weeks and they notify you by email etc, They take your license and give you a certificate so you can drive for  3 months in Spain,
