Hi,

We have recently obtained our Irish citizenship and passports and thought we had solved all our problems. We have had a property in Torrevieja for 8 years but have recently retired and wish to live here permanently and possibly work, we have been here since August but our going home next month until after Xmas.we have had some many variations of what is needed to get Residency we are totally confused, does anyone have a clue what the procedure is, we went to the Town hall today on the advice of our Solicitor but we’re told at the Town hall that we had to go to Alicante first, please someone simplify the procedure

To get residency here in Spain as Irish passport holders.........

If you have Irish passports you will need to sign on the foreigners register at the Local Police station within three months of arrival. You will need to prove a certain level of income and healthcare.

Here is some information:

Are you sure it's the local police station? When we went through this it was a National Police station and we did ours in Elche. If you book an appointment to sign on the register then it comes up under National Police procedures. The foreigners' office in Playa Flamenca did our NIE but wouldn't do the signing on of the register and said we have to go to a National Police foreigners' office and gave us the options of Elche or Alicante.

Yes, slip of the keyboard.....

Definitely National Police station as described in the links which hopefully the OP will read.

Hi Shillyian,

As Irish passport holders, you are EU citizens, so for you, what we call "residency" is actually signing onto the register of foreigners.  You do not have to do this at Alicante, you can do it at any National Police Station.  We initially tried to do ours in 2016 at Torrevieja, but were marched straight out again for not having a translator with us.  It's a dingy office and very busy, so we went to Orihuela the second time and were in and out in less than 15 minutes - a much more pleasant experience!  Steve (Tebo53) has given you some good links, but if you have any queries, just ask.

Kind regards,

Kim
