Yesterday we received an email purporting to come from the Suma office stating that we need to set up a direct debit to pay IBI  to start on the 6th of November. Pardon my ignorance but what is IBI please can anyone tell me?

We are non resident if this makes any difference.

Thank you.

Hi Gillian,

IBI is Spain's equivalent of UK council tax and in this region, it has to be paid to the SUMA collections agency.  Usually, the 'voluntary' payment period is on or around 6 September, but because of Covid-19, it has been extended to 6 November this year.  It's worth noting that, although they say the direct debit will leave an account on 2 November, direct debits usually go out about a month early, so in a 'normal' year, that will be in August.

By the way, you're not obliged to pay by DD - you can pay your bill online at www.suma.es.

Kind regards,

Kim
