The other day I found my old CB radio 27MHz, From what I have seen it seems to still exist. I have listened on my Sony 7600 to the relevant frequencies but apart from some noises I did not hear anything intelligible either in simple AM or SSB. True I only used the little telescopic aerial. I do have another 3 stage low noise pre-amp with its own antenna.

Some 40 years ago there was a huge CB community dominated by truckers backed up by lucky-to-help base stations. Cellphones and GPS with almost unlimited range made CB and even 2m HAM obsolete. I'd say that the whole SW HAM world has passed away.

There is still Ham activity on some of the SW bands,  in SSB I have quite recently (a month ago) listened in on stuff from various countries on the 7 and 14 MHz bands, and a higher freq band, not sure if it was 21 or 28MHz. I have only used a Sony 7600 with its little telescopic aerial. Local pollution of the airwaves is pretty bad though with all sorts of buzzes and clicks etc. The main use of my radio in recent times has been on 150KHz listening to approaching spherics. (lightning) During the day there is nothing on SW, and when I have repaired old radios with SW,  I thought they were still defective, but as night arrives so it comes alive again with Chinese, African and Asian state and comercial / religious stations coming in.

Brings back some old memories of being a member of our local CB radio club in the 70's and 80's.

It was surprising how many local people we got to know well and are still friends now.

Good times.

They were good times, however I wasn't a pensioner in those days but in my late 30's!!

Good relationships were formed by having the CB constantly tuned in, one in the car and one at home. Strange to think now but we had CB parties, outings, treasure hunts and weekend rallies etc.

Soon changed though after the young kids were given them for presents and were unwilling to conform to the airwave rules. They used to interrupt conversations with swearing, foul language and loud music. Then the licence fee was introduced and everything seemed to end very quickly. Then with the introduction of mobile phones and internet CB radios just disappeared completely.

Yes they had them when i was born 35 years ago but were only used by hauling companies and a handful of people locally. My former mother inlaw met her ex partner that way. Tbf it was a much more social time back then cos you actually had to speak to people (using your voice) to get to know them, now you get know a screen lol.

As a foreigner in Italy it was illegal for me to have a CB radio. I built a dual conversion RX  and a small TX. Some 20 years later, my son born in Italy (Dual Nationality) had a CB radio with a 500W PA. which he used on Sunday mornings. He used to set off the burglar alarm, sometimes even when it was off.I noticed a couple of years ago that the licence here was free to the over 65s.           I found the little active antenna that I built too so I will try that one evening.

BTW. is anyone into metal detectors?

Sorry . I'm a little late to the table. CB radio dxing is alive and kicking in Spain. From Ireland . I can hear 30 division (Spanish operators). As well as France , Germany and Scandanavia. Ssb was the usual mode of dxing but now there is FM . I often hear conversations from Germany and the UK on FM. If you use a better antenna, you might receive more stations. (I used to check on small antennas and never heard anything, until I stumbled on to a local group on fb ).  I would love to hear of any CB operators around the Costa Blanca . ( It's all totally legal now , if you stick between the guidelines ). 🙂 73s
